DS (2 yrs) getting knees stuck inbetween cot bars- help!!!

Help please!

DS is 2.2 yrs old (but was 10 wks prem...) and has recently started to stick his legs through the cot bars when standing up and then getting his knees stuck inbetween the bars- much to his frustration and ours! He often stands up in the cot for a bit before going to sleep and it hasn't caused a problem before now. Obviously his knees have got bigger!! He's done it the past few days and hasn't learnt not to stick his legs through (which I'd hoped would happen)....

Should we try to erect some sort of barrier/mesh to stop him sticking his legs through? Or should I try to shift him to a big bed? (worried selfishly of him escaping and running about at all times of night!!) We have another LO on it's way in the next month so originally hadn't planned to move DS into a big cot until after LO's arrival...to minimise too many changes etc.

Any advice would be very welcome!!

Sorry for long post xx

move him to big bed now, with bed guard on. Choose a low bed.

Thanks for the replies

I was hoping to moving him straight to a single bed as we don't have a toddler bed (& are a bit cash-strapped having just got a new car!)... do you think we could start off by putting the single bed mattress on the floor with bed guard?

We got this junior bed for our ds. Should do til he's about 7 I think.

Thank you hippopotamouse, that is a good price! Unfortunately we live in Northern Ireland & don't have an Ikea here yet.... But I will have a think about our options... Definitely think will have to make the move out of the cot soon!

Could you get a bed guard and put it inside the cot so the mesh is between knees and bars as it were? You know you'll need one eventually...

I just bought a pine adult sized bed for my DS, but one that is quite low. I cable tied the side of the cot to it for a while and had the cot matress between the bed and the wall (as there was a bit of a gap).

After a few weeks, i took the cot side away and just had some floor cushions on the floor. He fell out a few times, but he's five now and still does on occasion!

Well last night after I posted DS managed to get his knees stuck through another 2 times until he was tired and grumpy. As a temporary measure/last resort DP removed the side of the cot entirely and we had to just hope DS would stay put (& put lots of cushions, sleeping bag etc. on floor beside the cot). Luckily DS slept well although seemed very confused when he fell out of bed at 7am this morning and then went and opened his bedroom door! So we are getting a bed guard for the cot and will keep him in there for as long as possible before buying a bed.

Many thanks for all your help!

I've just put dd in a bed, she's just turned 2 and is in a full size single bed with a bed guard. She loves it, is very excited about having her own big bed and looks so sweet snuggled in her duvet. She has woken a couple of times not sure where she is but just takes a little reassurance to go back to sleep. I've also had to tuck her in a few times as she wriggles alot and was used to a gro bag, but no trouble really, I don't think she's realised she can get out of her bed yet though! We did it as she can undo her grobags and was getting very close to climbing out of her cot anyway and didn't want her bumping onto the floor!

HonoriaGlossop · 04/06/2007 13:24

Would a gro-bag help?

madmumNika · 04/06/2007 15:53

HonoriaGlossop- DS didn't like gro-bags after he turned about 15 months old...he would also stand up get tangled in them & fall down a lot (never learns!) plus he has bad eczema so we have to be very careful with bedding, pjs etc. But a good idea nonetheless if anyone else has this problem!! Think it is just time I let him grow up into a big bed....

hah...limbs stuck through cot bars...our dd is in a grobag but has, to her pleasure, found we rush up to rescue her deliberately placed arms stuck (?) in the bars when she shouts through the monitor 'arm stuck help!'
