How do I deal with 5 yo scared of food?

I'm hoping someone can help me as I honestly can't deal with the situation with my son anymore...

He's a super fussy eater, won't eat at nursery etc. Hes classic super sensitive. I've managed it as best I can giving him what he likes whilst trying to introduce new foods. Trying to not stress at mealtimes etc
This is frustrating enough but now he's turned it up a gear... recently he screams and screams at mealtimes, refuses to eat the limited things he likes, smashing them up and going totally mental. Tonight I gave him plain pasta and he screamed and screamed ran away, told me he was scared, what if it tasted different, said he wished he was his sister so he could eat anything.
He causes so much stress at every mealtime it's becoming totally unbearable and I don't know what to do... if it was a case of a limited diet I could live with that but it's not it's sheer terror and hysterics at most mealtimes with food he supposedly likes.
HV just says it's totally normally, he just a sensitive chap and may grow out of it but it's the being scared that gets to me and the appalling meltdowns.... surely that isn't normal?

Can anyone help?

I think I have to disagree with your HV, this sounds way beyond being fussy but it is good that he’s able to articulate how it makes him feel.

I would try to film him if you can. Go to the GP and ask for a referral. If they won’t give you a referral for the food phobia, I’d try to insist that he needs an urgent referral for anxiety and not eating.

I’d also ask the GP to weigh and measure him and record this for you. We had to have a referral for our DS losing weight through a medical issue and the Paeditrician will need the weight and height as a baseline.
