Is this teething?

DS is 13wks and has been frantically chewing fists and drooling for weeks. In the last 3 nights his sleep has gone haywire (was previously good at night, only waking once for a feed) - waking time after time and taking aaaaages to get back to sleep.

The only thing that helps is Calpol which we have given in desperation the last 2 nights after he's been awake nearly 2 hours in the wee hours. After that he sleeps OK.

Have also had two huge (and I mean HUGE) nappies yesterday and today.

No obvious signs of illness or raised temp, is fine during day if occasionally grumpy and feeding quite often.

Surely it's a bit early for teething? Are there other ways I can tell? or is it just a growth spurt?

It sounds like it could be teething, but it doesn't mean that any teeth will come out immediately. There's a bit of groundwork to get through first!

Babies go through all sorts of phases when it comes to sleep ... you won't be out of the woods until he's much older , but temperature is everything when they're small.

If that's fine, he's fine.

It's quite possible that it is his teeth.
They probably won't appear for a couple of months yet, but it's quite likely that he's suffering as they grow and move around inside his gums.
My DD seemed to be having tooth problems at about 4 months. I could feel hard lumps in her gums, she drooled a lot and had some nappy soreness. I thought I'd be seeing some early teething, but actually her first incisor actually came through only 2 days ago.
I guess the best thing you can do is continue as you are and give him lots of cuddles, love and calpol!!
Good luck!!

not too early for teething. As desiderata said, teething symptoms can be seen weeks before the teeth come through (unfortunately!)

dd2 actually had 2 teeth through at this age, and by 6 months had 6.

It sounds like teething, try getting him a couple of soft teether play toys. Also keep a lookout for an ear infection, they do the chewing bit for that as well, thou'the other symptoms don't quite fit in. Baby's have their on schedule, which can go out of whack for no obvious reason too.

It's never too early for teething. Each child is differnt. Mine was born with one lower tooth, got the second one at 6 weeks, and then nothing till she was 7 months. At 9 mos. she has 8 teeth now.
