Hi hope someone can offer some advice or support. First time mum to an almost 5 month old. He got his 4 month vaccinations almost 2 weeks ago and has been more irritable in general ever since. It's like they have changed my baby from a happy smiley playful one to one that cries or is unhappy most of the time.i thought it was teething, which I think he is going through, but even with Nurofen and other teething remedies, he is still not himself really and I can't help but think it's the vaccinations causing the irritability. Can it last this long? His temperature is fine and has a good appetite, also he is sleeping well. But just doesn't want to play on his playgym as much and is generally just more whiney than he ever was. It's so upsetting. Nothing really pleases him. Unfortunately i dont feel i can approach my HV or GP as find them useless but I'm going to have to do something if this keeps up. Could he have had some reaction to the vaccines that we cant see? He isn't going through a leap as just came out of leap 4 when he got the jabs.has anyone else experienced this with their little one?x

For me 5 months was when they started wanting a bit more from life, and were a bit moany. It calms down when they start moving and can get to what they want.

But it could be something like earache, so I would take him to be checked. Say to the GP that it feels like he's in a bit of pain because he always seems uncomfortable, don't start blaming the vaccinations as it is unlikely they are directly to blame and the GP will think you're just being a bit precious.

For my dc#3 he had his 8 week vaccinations and didn't really recover properly. He was quite ill for about 3 days, and grumpy for the next 10. I then took him to the GP and it turned out he had quite a bad ear infection (and he continued getting them constantly until he had grommets in at 20 months).

He didn't get his 12 week vaccinations until a year and his 16 week ones until around 18 months. They also insisted on doing them separately.

I could blame his 8 week jabs for the illness as he didn't recover, but realistically I know that's not a side effect of the jabs. The only thing they could have done is lower his resistance to make it more likely he would get one then. But then because he then got them constantly, I suspect if he hadn't got one then, he would have got one very soon.

Yes definitely take him to the GO and say he is constantly whingy and ask if they can check his ears, throat and tummy. I wouldn’t mention your thoughts on it being the vaccinations though, it’s probably a huge coincidence.

Agree with Witchend too on them wanting more at this age. Have a look for ideas on how to make tummy time more interesting. Mine would never have just lain in a baby gym at any age, they both needed more.

Thank you girls. I had wondered if he's just bored with usual surroundings and his toys as when I'm walking him facing forward he loves it and is fine when out walking in the pram and in other places! I thought him wanting entertained all the time in a different way might be a distraction from any pain/discomfort he is in but maybe he just wants more variety? Hard to know. I will take him to the gp to get checked out just to be sure for anything else.x
