2 years and 9 months boy

I am the mother of a 2 years and 9 months boy. He has been attending child care since January of this year. He is an only child and does not have any cousins of his age so for a long time he was only staying and playing with adults. He has a speech delay and is attending speech therapy. Sometimes I worry he might have a condition which is delaying his speech. He is a bubble boy and is very intelligent. He is now improving in his speech (saying words and also joining two words) but as a mother I worry all the time, especially when I hear his peers talking. Any feedback is very much appreciated.

Does he have more than one language to learn? Usually speech therapists can spot obvious signs of autism etc so would have flagged it up if they thought it was a major issue.

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes he speaks English but he hears another language as well around him. Re autism first psychology said he might have mild autism and second psychologist said that he should give more time for him to develop since it is still too early to give a solid judgement.

Joining two words at 2 years 9 months is NOT speech delay for a child in a bilingual environment.

Born into our trilingual household, DD had only 3 words at the age of 2. It's normal. Don't stigmatise him before you look into average bilingual language acquisition timelines.

Hi OP, if you're worried about autism, try the m-chat test - it's an online test for autism in toddlers. If his score is within the normal range then I agree with other posters that it may be related to the bilingual thing. Lots of toddlers have speech delay and it's not a sign of anything more serious - my DS2 went to speech therapy but he's now 8yo and doing very well at school. Try not worry Smile
