My 20 month old son

I'm not sure where else to turn to as I've asked everyone for advice.. bit of a long post guys...

My son is 20 months old and when he started eating foods rusks and milk and jars he's been fine with but when it comes to solids he just gags or he's sick..
he will eat skips, pink panthers and baby biscuits things like that as they melt in the mouth he does know how to chew but I'm at a bit of a loss on what to try. I took him the doctors just to try and rule out anything underlying and he said he will just do it in his own time.. but when he was around 7 months old we went out for dinner and I gave him a kiddies patatoe waffle to nibble as I've put him back in his pram he's started turning blue and wasn't breathing so I've gone into complete panic hitting his back trying to get it out shouting to get somebody to help me and the manager ended up getting it out and it was one of the scariest moments of my life but I'm not sure if maybe that could be a factor of him struggling when it comes to proper food? 🤔. But I suppose I also don't help as i do watch him cautiously whenever he eats something... any advice would be great x

It does sound quite old not to be able to manage proper food. How old was he when you saw the GP? It might be worth talking to your HV about your concerns. I’d also look into doing a Paediatric First Aid Course in case he chokes again.

One thing that may be causing his difficulties is tongue tie. Has he ever been checked for this?

Another suggestion is enlarged tonsils. My DS gagged on food so just drank milk till he was 24m with the occasional melty crisps like you describe. Does he snore loudly or miss breaths when he sleeps? If so take him back to gp (get a sound recording if you can) and ask for an ENT referral.
