Do small for gestational age babies grow to b average ?

Me and my husband are average height

I’m 1.68 m and he is 1.83m

My baby was born at 37 weeks , at 2.6 kg. I know he was restricted because up until 32 weeks his growth was normal and then at 33 the measurements for my abdomen started being off and for his abdomen the scan at 36 weeks showed that his abdominal size was different.

I lost weight through pregnancy .. I felt something is wrong but no one would take me seriously.

He was born 2.6 kg, at 37 weeks.. at that point I was mad that I was right and should’ve pushed more..

Anyway. He is now 5.5 months. Weights 7 kg. He is smaller than other babies his age but is around 10 percentile and used to be 2nd percentile.

Is this gonna be a life long issue ? I can’t help but blame myself

My son was born at 38 weeks because of poor growth in the womb. He was 5lb9 and remained tiny (below the 0.4th centile) until he was 6 months old. After he started solids he grew loads and now at 4 he is still fairly skinny but taller than average.

My daughter was born symeterically under the 0.4th centile. She flat lined and dipped below all growth centiles for many months. The growth charts exist to pick up the few like her who really fail to thrive so further investigations can take place just in case a child has something that has been missed. Most who have a later IUGR glitch do go on to catch up to where they would have been if they had not had a period of IUGR. My daughter did not begin to grow till her teens, she went on to a height of 160cm but with a physical petite frame and build.

I have identical twin boys. One born 2nd percentile and one 9th percentile. At 11 weeks old they are 25th and 75th percentile. I've been told that because they're identical the little twin will eventually catch up, which suggests they can make big leaps!

My daughter was born on the 9th centike then went to to 75th when I stopped breast feeding, stayed there for about 18 months and now she's 2 and on the 50th xx

Mine were born at 37 and 36 weeks respectively following induction due to IUGR. Dd weighed 2.9 kg and ds 2.5. Both are now grown-up, and taller than average. But they did take some time to catch up.

I think most do but if by age 4 they have not 'caught up' then they could be considered for growth hormone therapy.

Don't blame yourself

DD was born at 37 weeks and was 3lb 1oz, she stayed tiny and seemed to put more effort into growing hair than putting weight on, on average she put up to 1 once every 2 weeks, fast forward to age 7 she was still on the slim side around 2.5 stone but getting taller by the day, fast forward again to age 11, she is perfect weight is up to 6st 10 she is 5ft 3in tall and a whopping size 6 shoes, now im wishing she would stop growing, im sure all will be fine x

triballeader · 14/07/2018 08:57

Typo, the comment about the hair....that made me smile. My daughter also had an incredible head of hair. She still does. Not sure if it was down to just genes or all the extra milk fortifiers and the very high calorie diet BCH prescribed for her to try and save her life. Her friends envy her as she can devour a huge meal followed by a whole box of cream doughnuts and still stay a petite size 4.

Anger is misplaced here because all they would have done is monitored you and induced you at 37 weeks. Also for the gestation I think your baby would have been on the charts, albeit at the lower end.

Most catch up by 4 years old, if not they can be considered for growth hormone if they fit the NHS funding criteria. The Child Growth Foundation can advise you.

But really, please let go of the anger at medics and yourself, it’s not helpful or correct. And if it’s any consolation my baby was a whole kg smaller than yours so if you blame yourself you must really blame me: I know you would never blame me so maybe be kind to yourself as you would to others :)

My dd was 5lb 12oz. She was induced due to size concerns and was born on her due date. She put on weight rapidly in the first few weeks seemingly trying to catch up but she was always in clothes a size below. Now shes 4 and seems firmly average. She is petite and slight but so am i. I never blamed myself for her size. Theres nothing i could have done and nothing i did caused it. Dont be so hard on yourself Flowers
