toddlers and grinding of teeth?

Anyone else have or had a toddler who does this? My DS2 (2y4m) is doing it a LOT and it drives me mad! Is is harmful to his teeth and how can I get him to stop? Or is it just harmless and I should leave him alone?

My DS1 goes through phases of doing this, drives me nuts, awful awful thing that they do. I try telling him not to do it, but he does it more. I just ignore it, in the end and after a day or 2 he stops.

hippmummy · 28/05/2007 08:51

DS2 (19 months) does it too!

I can't stand it, but i don't think it will do them any harm. I think they just enjoy experimenting with the sensation.
I'm just waiting for the phase to pass because it really makes me shudder

ds was doing this but I didn't make too big a deal about it(which was hard as I found it deeply annoying and it went through me like fingernails on a blackboard!)

He has now stopped of his own accord (he is 23m)

Maybe he will just stop doing it ?

bubblerock · 28/05/2007 18:54

My 3.6 year old does it at night and it is sooo oud and horrible

REIDmylips · 28/05/2007 18:56

my ds is 9 months and he does it loads, it goes straight through me and dh, its horrid!

Genidef · 28/05/2007 20:46

MIne does it at night, when she's sleeping. We only noticed it on holiday when we were sharing a room. Is she stressed?!

Didn't know they did this deliberately!

Much grinding here by DS (23mths) he also ofetn sticks his lower jaw out so his lower teeth are over the top ones. Am sure this can't be good for him at all, but don't think there's much I can do.

tribpot · 28/05/2007 21:03

Mine does it in his sleep sometimes - it's hideous! And at 23 months, he still doesn't have a full compliment of teeth, he has the front four plus (I think) molars bottom and top. God knows where the others are. Maybe they're hiding so they don't have to be ground

Dottydot · 28/05/2007 21:06

ds1 (5) does this every night - it's unbearable listening to it - drove me mad the other night as he'd been poorly and was in bed with me - he eventually fell asleep but then started grinding his teeth! He goes to the dentists every 6 months for a check up and the dentist has never mentioned it, so have to assume it's not damaging his teeth too much. Future girlfriends are going to kill him though...

EllieK · 28/05/2007 21:08

my ds1 used to do it but thankfully he stopped on his own.

it is a problem in that it wears the teeth down, by the time my 'big' teeth grew in my 'baby' teeth were virtually non-existant thanks to my grinding them at night.

I wouldn't worry unless it continues as he gets much older, then maybe mention it to your dentist? I had a shield to stop me grinding once i got my adult teeth

schneebly · 28/05/2007 21:11

the weird thing about DS2 is that he doesn't do it at all during the night (we co-sleep often) just seems to have made a habit of it during the day. It used to be just when he got excited but now it is all the time! Glad it hasnt been mentioned by dentist dottydot! Maybe he will just grow out of it!

My dd used to do it in her sleep, thankfully she grew out of it. Her front teeth really wore down though. Dh used to do it in his sleep too and he dentist made him a mouthguard. Thankfully he has stopped too as the sound goes right through me.

emat · 30/05/2007 14:06

dd used to do it at night and wore her front teeth to almost nothing. She's lost them now and her big teeth are starting to grow down thankfully.
I don't think it's bad for them unless they do it with their second teeth. Awful sound though!

Ceolas · 30/05/2007 14:15

I just heard my DS doing this last night (in his sleep)

Awful!
