He sobs his heart out, begs and pleads until we take them off. Any tips? It is getting too hot to wear shoes.

doodles instead? What doesn't he like ? Surely he can wear sheos and socks.

kittypants · 27/05/2007 15:31

by sandals do you mean ones with bits in between toes?or just sandals in general?

Wheelybug · 27/05/2007 15:44

Think its a 'phase' - I have the opposite problem, dd will ONLY wear sandals and if I get her into something else she sobs and screams until I change them. I had to bribe her into her trainers with chocolate today () as its pouring. She is also like this with dresses - she will only wear dresses, no trousers.

Is hard work so sympathies.

I would try doodles as suggested or don't clarks do boys sandals that aren't open at the end if that makes sense.

squidette · 27/05/2007 15:48

barefeet are yummy

As soon as we can, we all 'free-our-feet'. I even drive barefoot.

If he hates sandals, there are some really lovely soft shoes that offer some protection here. They do ship, but they are uk companies that do similar too.

TheBlonde · 27/05/2007 15:51

Have you tried them with socks?

gingernut · 27/05/2007 15:56

Are they rubbing his feet? Or perhaps he just feels odd in footwear without socks. Neither of mine like sandals much either. ds1 (5) will usually only agree to wear them with socks , and so far I haven't persuaded ds2 (2) at all (he puts them on, then takes them off straight away and requests his trainers instead - fortunately they are ds1's old sandals, I haven't shelled out for new ones). TBH I don't worry much - if they feel more comfortable in their trainers then I don't argue.

WigWamBam · 27/05/2007 15:58

It's only too hot to wear shoes if he is too hot to wear shoes, though!

Is it really worth the battle? If he wants shoes and socks, why not let him wear shoes and socks?

Are you sure his sandals are comfortable? They may be hurting him.

emsiewill · 27/05/2007 16:21

I was going to say what WWB just said - some battles are just not worth having.

I learnt that the hard way...

CoteDAzur · 27/05/2007 16:24

I could have written that first post. We are having huge problems with DD (20 months) who are refusing these days to wear anything other than her socks and trainers. It IS very hot down here in the south of France and her socks are soaked when I take her shoes off...

dissle · 27/05/2007 16:38

choose your battles and make sure that it is worth it...sandals...definitely NOT worth it IMHO.
Doodles are good, bare feet better, if he gets that upset then dont bother!

jackie2kids · 27/05/2007 19:56

The past 2 summers I,ve bought DS(nearly 4) sandals and never wears them, hates the feel of the sand / grass/ stones on his feet in them. Also can't kick a ball properly. This year I've bought baseball boots.

DH also hates wearing sandals

GateGipsy · 30/05/2007 09:47

I have no idea what doodles are.

The sandals are fine, they are fully adjustable and we've tried making them as loose as possible as well. They're from Clarks, and they are the open at the front kind, with nothing between the toes. Have also tried him in jelly's (definite no - but then that might be the texture).

At the moment we just let him wear shoes and socks. But he has to have footwear on at nursery, especially for going in the garden. And they spend most of their time outdoors when the weather permits. Last week, when it was around 25 most days, I was having to peel the socks off him at the end of the day, they were so sweaty. When we're at the playground he quickly gets tired if it is hot, not something he did last summer when he didn't mind wearing sandals.

Bare feet is fine in our house and garden but I'm not about to let him run around a playground in bare feet. In even the best kept ones I've found the occaisional piece of glass.

Doodles are the cotton canvas Clarks shoes, usually t-bar, velcro or laces.

Hulababy · 30/05/2007 09:52

There are Doodles by Clarks.

Startrite do their own version, normally about £2 dearer but IMO they are slightly better quality and for DD a better fit.
