When should a baby hold their head up?

Had 6 week check with the GP today. She held DD by the hands and pulled her up from lying down. DD's head sort of lolled to the side and the doctor said she would expect her to have a stronger neck by now & she should be able to lift her head up. She also said that it's clear she is held a lot.

I was under the impression DD would be older than 1.5 months before expected to hold her head up when supported in a sitting position. When I hold her over my shoulder she lifts her head up high and looks around the room.

Hate questioning doctors but is this doc right to say DD should be holding her head up already? She said we need to go back in 2 weeks to check neck strength.

Thanks!

Sorry this is such a short straight to the point answer as I have no advice but I do believe my ds was holding his head up at 6 weeks yes, it was a bit wobbling around but definite holding up.

I honestly wouldn't worry, all babies are different. We had the same at our six week check (same doctor also referred us for downs when our DS definitely doesn't have downs - long story and nothing to do with head control!) anyway DS is now 14 weeks and can hold his head up a lot more but still wobbly when he gets tired, he does have a big head though 😂😂 just keep persisting with tummy time x

OP it sounds like your baby can hold her head up she just didn't at the doctors. My boys have excellent neck strength but even so sometimes loll especially when tired. Don't worry.

Thanks for your replies.

@ClareB83 you're right she can. We were just playing and I did what the doctor did ( held her by the hands and pulled her up to sitting) and her head lolled for a short while then she held it up so I think it's fine!
