for the last couple of weeks my 14 month old DD has been throwing EVERYTHING! toys, bottles and anything she can lay her hands on. she always says 'oh o' as she does it which the whole family (including me) thought was quite sweet and funny. but today in the supermarket she turned around, picked out a jar of mayonaise from the trolley and threw it to the floor shouting 'oh o' it smashed on the floor..everyone was looking at me! so ok, now i know its got to stop before she hurts someone or herself! do i ignore her, tell her a firm 'no' or something else? just dont know the best way to handle it really? am i fussing over nothing?

my ds does the same. I thought it was a boy thing!! We've just been ignoring it totally and trying to show no emotion when he does it. We also never pick what he has thrown up. He is getting better although I think it'll take loads of consistency till he actually stops.
Lol at the mayo -

It's very normal, elesbells. This will continue for a while yet, and it's not indicative of any fiendish tendencies on your little girl's part.

Given time, she will emotionally absorb that this is not the right thing to do. But there's no point in trying to reason with a 14mo. They simply won't understand.

So you ignore the behaviour at the mo, but you ignore it with a frown.

Honestly, they're hugely perceptive.

I hope it wasn't Hellmans

My 14 m/o boy is doing this too. We are working hard on " balls are for throwing" lego is for putting here..., lemons are for holding etc etc". HArd work as many others let their kids chuck stuff around willy nilly. BUT boy has a very good arm for his size and can be quite acurate, I don't want him hurting some one so am having to be VERY vigilant and intervene BEFORE he chucks an inappropiate item.
We do play games with balls at home a lot and he gets plenty of chances to throw appropiatly and lots of praise for doing so.
DH is cricket mad... like father like son.
