The 1 Year Review – now anxious

DS has his 1 year review this afternoon with DH and after filling in the forms this morning I’m feeling so anxious and really wish my employer would give me time off to attend but thats a whole different thread

The questionnaire has made us realise just how little our 11 months and 3 week old DS actually does. We haven’t been able to tick the “yes” box on any of the personal-social questions and only one “yes” on the communication section.

He also still hasn’t grasped letting go of objects, let alone throwing or rolling a ball towards us in a game (as one of the questions asked!)

Can someone please just hand hold until HV comes and goes or even better tell me babies still remain tippy toed and do not talk yet at this age and my DS is normal.

So HV said DS is behind for his age. She said she will have to come back and assess him another 6 weeks. Not really sure what this all means. Sad anyone?

We didn't have a 1 yr review, and I don't think they are standard (normally 6 months and 27m I think). A lot babies can't walk at that stage so no idea what the tippy toes thing is about, very few talk and I'm sure none of my DC could roll a ball at that age.

Thank you for responding BeeMyBaby our HVs do a review between 9-12 months as per the NHS guidance using the ASQ-3 questionnaire. DS was assessed using the 12 month questionnaire and he missed vast majority of the milestones and even looking at the 10 month questionnaire he doesn't hit all of them.

Tippy toed, I mean he doesn't stand flat footed for long, if at all, he prefers standing on his toes if he furniture cruises.

It sounds like the HV wants to wait and see how he develops over the next six weeks. All children develop at different rates so it could be that he is just a bit behind at present, but progressing. If they suspect a more significant delay then I would expect to be referred to the Community Paeds for further assessment.

It is a very hard stage to be at, as you just want answers and no one can really say for definite either way. It all depends on how he develops and that takes time. Do accept any referrals. It is much better to wait and see in the system than out of it, then if help is needed it can be put in place as soon as possible.

magicroundabouts thank you. It does make sense, if she was concerned then we would be rendered already. I never saw him as being behind until now either.

Try not to worry. Easier said than done I know. There is such a wide range of normal development, especially in very young children. I'd wait for the next appointment with the HV and take it from there.

I would say that if your DS does seem to be significantly delayed when reassessed then push for referral. Don't let them fob you off with a wait and see we will review again in 6 months approach. Waiting lists can be very long. If concerns resolve then it is no problem to drop off the list, but if not then you have saved valuable time.

magicroundabouts thanks again, I'm going to give them a call today to see exactly what is going on and what to expect in 6 weeks time when they said they'll reassess him.
