Has anyone regretted putting their baby in a helmet for plagiocephaly?

Hi!

I have an appointment at ahead4babies this week to see about a helmet for my 6 month old.

She has a flat head at the back right hand side, misaligned ears and one side of her forehead bulges when looking from above.

Has anyone regretted putting heir baby in a helmet? They seem barbaric but I don't want my baby to have a wonky face the rest of her life

Also, how long did it take for your baby's head to be corrected? And how many appointments did you have to attend??

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi - I’m ever so sorry to resurrect this thread. I would like to know if any of the parents who used and who didn’t use the helmet how their babies’ head shape are now? How long was until you saw any improvements if any?
I’m going to see AHead4babies and they recommended the helmet as my daughter has a 2cm asymmetry.
Thank you so much

Hi there my son is 16 months old and while his head is still a bit on the flat side, it’s dramatically better than it was at 3 months when one side of his head was noticeably flat. We didn’t use a helmet but we did see a cranial osteopath. I must admit that his head shape improved around the time we started seeing her but I honestly don’t know if that was just coincidence as around the same time he started to sit independently and spend less time laying on his back. The paediatrician we saw was very skeptical about helmets and outright told us that they don’t really work. This did put us off I must admit. His head still isn’t perfectly round but now he has hair (a lot of it) you can barely even notice it. Xx

Thank you so much for your reply.
Sounds very promising as I am quite reluctant in using the helmet too. Could I ask if his asymmetry was mild or severe? I’m going to see an osteopath tomorrow and hope to have more insight. Xx

It was moderate. He didn’t have any bulging in the forehead area and his ears were level but his face had widened and one side At the back of his head was extremely flat and totally out of proportion. I was so concerned but I’m glad I didn’t put him through wearing a helmet. Obviously none of us want our LO’s going through life with a flat head but it has honestly improved so much over time that you can’t really notice it, unless you are specifically looking at it. It’s not perfect but I figure he’s got another 8 months or so before he’s 2 so hopefully it will continue to round out between now and then. Good luck x

My DD had torticollis and plagiocephaly - it was really obvious! physio (nhs) tummy time and cranial osteopathy and she was fine after a few months, these helmets aren't recommended on the nhs are they? I would see a consultant privately if you are worried that isn't connected with one of these companies.

Veronica82 · 21/01/2020 12:57

Thank you again for your replies... I had another consultation with another helmet company LOCband and I don’t think we will go with the treatment. They measured my daughter’s asymmetry less than 1.6cm whereas AHead4babies measured 2.1cm... huge difference so AHead4babies are not trustworthy !!!

Veronica82 · 21/01/2020 13:02

They put me off, as they were very pushy, and expensive £2000 treatment. Yes I’m going to see a cranial osteopath. no the helmet aren’t recommended by NHS.
It sounds like consistent tummy time, physio are the best holistic option for this. Thank you for reassurance xxx

Also consider a paediatric chiropractor.

They can do gentle adjustments to the skull.
