Placing things in rows

My 20 month old places objects, toys, teddies, anything in rows. When I get home from work there will be half a dozen or so rows all over the house.
Has anyone else experienced this? What's it all about?
My concern is that it might be an early indication of future obsessive/compulsive disorder.

Think they nearly all do it, completely normal

BigBird · 12/08/2004 14:28

yep, dd does it too. Rows of teddies, sticks, books...whatever !

clairabelle · 12/08/2004 14:29

I'm sure my dd did this (now 4) and no signs of OCD. I'm sure it's part of their 'sorting' development.

Northerner · 12/08/2004 14:29

Totally normal IMO. My ds is 2.4 and he is forever lining up his trucks and cars, either vertically or horizontaly. Has done for ages.

Kayleigh · 12/08/2004 14:29

my ds2 did this from about a year till...well he is three now and still does it. Apparently it is very common especially in boys. He also had to have everything facing the right way and would go ape if someone moved one, which my ds1 liked to do to wind him up It is nothing to worry about.

Azure · 12/08/2004 14:32

I'll second what everyone else has said - it's completely normal. DS (almost 3) still does it, particularly with his cars. I'm sure there was a thread on this a while back, but I wouldn't know where to begin searching for it.

Found it here

dd ( nearly 3 ) also does the same, not so much now.....raisins, her dollies, her books, the pillows......she IS very neat, I wish I had the same tendencies!

hannahken180 · 12/08/2004 15:09

Thanks all.

She also likes to pile all her teddies on any unsuspecting individual and woe betide you if you let one fall off...

We have invented a new word to describe it. The verb Teddieing - To be teddied. She teddies, they teddie, nous teddieons.....

Funny, I have been wondering about my DS, 19mths doing the same thing. Paranoid about signs of autism, etc. My DD (4yrs) never did this. But he lines up blocks, shapes, trucks, etc along the edge of the settee or the windowsill. Glad to read from others that this is normal behaviour. Don't want him turning into the organised manic I can sometimes be with my wardrobe colour co-ordinated!!Sad, but true!

Hannah, like I said in the previous post this has been a forte of ds twin2 (28 months old) now for some time. He doesn't do it all the time but if there are cars or toys of a similar species then the get lined up. Not so much on the windowsill any more, usually on the roadmap rug.

I swear that kid is going to be traffic police when he is older!

And to show diversity ds twin1 has never really gotten into the lining up thing.

According to HV at their check up 6 months ago it is just one of those things they do, not to worry about it but it does seem to be more a boy thing (?) Heck it keeps the place neat!
