Left-handedness help.......

DS2 is nearly 2.5 He has been kicking any ball he can find since 2 weeks after he could walk, it was normally with his left foot, now it is exclusively with his left foot. (he is actually quite good - but that is another story!)

Does this mean he is going to be left - handed?

I am left handed but kick a ball with my right.

cupcakesgalore · 22/05/2007 12:08

I'm left handed, kick a ball with the left foot, would play tennis with either hand and am gen. v. mixed with hands. My DS is left handed now but it took till he was nearly 5 for him to decide that was the most comfortable hand - which is quite late.

lemonaid · 22/05/2007 12:11

Not necessarily. Handedness and footedness aren't always related, and even children who have appeared to have one consistently dominant hand can suddenly switch up to the age of five or so.

It probably increases the chances that he's left-handed, but no more than that.

clutteredup · 22/05/2007 12:11

I don't seewhat the worry is, he might be lefthanded but he might not - you know what he'll be quite normal either way - some of us LHers are you know. he'll decide when he's ready which side is dominant but it makes no difference to life ( well apart from the flubkdr thing - but you have to be a LHer to find out about it )

Lilymaid · 22/05/2007 12:23

DS2 is left footed (plays football regularly in a team) and right handed for writing, tennis etc. What is the problem with left handedness anyway - I'm left handed for writing, right handed for tennis and have managed to get through life without major difficulties except for fountain pen nibs!

smellymelly · 22/05/2007 12:24

Clutter - where did I say I was worried? I am just interested to see how these things work. I don't care which he is, just so long as he is healthy happy etc!!! You know the usual crap.

He does have ginger hair though so I do worry about that...

OK smelly I might have been getting a little defensive there - just some people do see it as a potential concern, and BTW I love redheaded children, they're my favourite - let me know if he is a leftie and he can join my leftie club , ( and I'll get to stroke his lovely red hair)

ktmoomoo · 22/05/2007 12:41

hi my ds is 13 and a lefty he eats right handed an does everything else left and he a bright thing bless him but he cant use a right handed can opener and i cant find a lefty one xxxx

Homebird8 · 22/05/2007 12:45

If you want to know which hand he's going to use, watch his hands - not his feet!

RanToTheHills · 22/05/2007 12:47

i'm another left hander/right-footer, think that often goes together and IME leftfootedness is no indicator whatsoever. Is anyone LHanded in yr family? If so much greater chances, often seems to skip a generaiton.

DrDaddy · 22/05/2007 12:52

I'm very strongly left-handed, have always been left-footed in football and rugby and I play all racquet sports with my left hand. Although strangely, I use scissors in my right hand, open stiff jars of marmelade etc. with my right.

smellymelly · 23/05/2007 21:45

LOL Clutteredup!!

He is still at the age where he uses both hands. I can use both for different things, so it is not a problem. Right is my dominant for writing, but could write with my left if pushed. I think I was left-footed going up the stairs when I was a babe.

But I can wait, it was only an observation.
