What words were your 18-21 month olds saying?

My daughter is 21 months (18 months corrected) and can say eya for hello, ba ba for bye and possibly baby.

Shes got a speech therapy appointment soon but I was just wondering if this is significantly less than others or still within normal ranges.

The health visitor has seemed to think shes behind for about 6 months now but the neurosurgeon shes under for a condition seems happy with it still.

What were other people's saying at this age, was it a lot of words or still a few/no words for some others?

My ds had a speech delay and wasn't speaking at all at this stage. He's now 7 and completely caught up.

My dd is almost 21 months and has more words than I could list but to give you an idea, mama, daddy, hi, bye, teddy, juice, shoes, baby, milk, button, bike, car, tummy, head, asleep, cuddle, pink, garden, dog etc.

She's also got several two word phrases such as all gone, all done, open door, trousers on, let's go, never mind, in bed etc.

Thanks for the reply, that's reassuring that your son caught up.
Did they ever find a reason for it or was it just down to needing a bit more time than some others?

No, we've never been given a reason. He was behind socially and academically as a result of not being able to speak but also understand spoken language. I think he had some kind of auditory processing disorder but that's just my opinion.

His hearing was checked and was fine and we were referred to speech and language who were beyond useless. It was really the nursery and school getting involved and giving him extra help that really changed things. Everything just seemed to click and he picked it all up in his own time.

There can be lots of reasons but from what I've seen some children do just need longer than others. The fact that your dd is saying some things in her own way shows that she wants to speak and understands the concept of communication.

Hi there my DD is 21 months also. She can string 2 words together and repeats everything. Has more words than I can count. At 18 months though she probably couldn't string them together as had a lot less words. She just seams to have taken off all of a sudden and a few of my friends with babies same age are all different really some same as my DD others can say 2 or 3 words. There all so different. But if your under a Neurologist I would think they were the specialist.
Hope it will all resolve and right it's self for you x

At that age I think my son was saying: Mama, Dada, bye, car, kitty cat, duck, drink, cracker, uh-oh (or his approximations of them). And that was about it. Mostly he got what he wanted by pointing and grunting His comprehension always seemed pretty solid though, so we didn't worry too much about him.

He'll be three at the end of July, and he never stops talking now. I have no idea how many words he knows either, I've stopped counting as it is so many hundreds.

I also have an 18 month old who I've recently become a little concerned with her lack of speech. My older daughter at the same age knew more words than I could list and was definitely 2-3 word phrases by 21/22 months.

My younger daughter says hi, bye bye, go, there, uh oh, teddy, up, down. She makes sounds for certain things she refers to, e.g she makes a specific sound for shoes, another sound for her sisters name.

I would just add, that I have taken a more bilingual approach with the younger one so it may well be that she's hearing two languages where as with older daughter I only spoke English and realised it was a mistake later, hence why I'm trying to speak my mother tongue to younger one.

I will however see my GP and get a speech and language therapists opinion.

My DD 20months says about 50 words and small sentences like mamas car, peppa book, bird in tree.
She was "delayed" in that she didnt make a single babble so no mama, dada, baba until after 12 months. Nothing except crying

I was so worried she had a hearing test. I bought the baby talk book by sally something and followed her instructions.

She very gradually built up her vocabulary and I find weeks will go by with no new words then suddenly 15new words will appear

I remember DS1 quite clearly pointing and saying "they're daddy's keys" when he was 21 months. He's 15 now and still very vocal!

WilliamLilliam · 01/06/2018 17:35

No words at all

wolfinfoxesclothing · 01/06/2018 17:43

My DS is nearly 2 and just picking up more words. He had maybe 3 words at 1 but didn't really progress much until recently. He has said 3 new words this week. He was slow to babble.

I have stressed so much over this. I had his hearing tested even though I didn't really think that was the issue ( hearing is ok)

Normally most HV don't take it seriously at this young age, as the range for speech is so varied. So In a way you are lucky to be referred to speech therapy so young. I can see my DS is getting there in his own way. Yes many of his friends do speak more than him, but I go to a lot of toddler activities / classes / groups and I've only come across one saying sentences before 2.
