19 month old toddler weeing the bed

Oh fellow mothers, I would very much appreciate any advice or tips on how to handle this situation with my 19 month old DS.

My gorgeous little boy has found his man parts. As i'm sure is typical for a little boy he likes to play with his parts and its now become a bit of a comfort thing for him. I've not endorsed this but haven't made it a taboo subject either.

Trouble is, while hes trying to get to sleep, he will put his hands in his nappy (Pampers premium protection Active fit) and point his bits upwards. Subsequently weeing all over himself and his bed. This wakes him up and he starts crying and screaming as he is uncomfortable and then struggles to go back down again.

I have tried putting him in vests, he still manages to get in there. I've tried vests and a small pair of shorts....no cigar, I don't know how hes managing to do this.

Trouble is, he has a very bad patch of eczema on his arm which he constantly scratches red raw and makes it bleed, so we are also having to put him in a thin long sleeved top.

Its getting hotter outside now and having all these clothes on him is just not fair. Hes getting too hot now.

I could easily bandage his arm for the eczema patch but i'm really stumped on how to handle the weeing the bed scenario that's happening most nights now.

Has anyone had the same or similar issue and can share some tips or tricks that have worked for them? My washing machine hasn't known whats hit it in the last month or so.

Any advice for a very tired and stressed mummy would be very much appreciated.

I’ve not had this no, sorry OP. I know it’s not what you asked but is he getting treatment for his eczema? Has he seen an allergy specialist?

When DS was that age we had a hot summer and he ended up sleeping with a fan pointing at him all night.

Thank you for your reply. We've seen the GP a few times but no specialist. We've been using diprobase for the eczema and aveeno for the itching and it generally works well but this patch in his arm just seems to want to stay put.

Doc ask to see an allergy specialist. In the meantime, I’d hoover his mattress and room, damp dust and freeze the soft toys he sleeps with in case it’s dust mite allergy. What do you wash his clothes in currently? My DSister had eczema for years. For her the allergy testing was key. She’s allergic to dust mites, cow’s milk protein and tree pollen. She also washes her clothes in a non-bio washing liquid and doesn’t use fabric softener.

Years ago, in equatorial Brazil, we slept with a fan in the corner of the room (sweeping left and right), and a thin flannel sheet over us. This made the heat and mosquitos bearable. Importantly, the breeze wasn't directly on our skin and didn't linger on any one part of the body.

Thanks for the tips. The eczema is pretty much under control. DH has had sphorasis most of his life and I had eczema as a kid so it's inherited rather than allergy related.

It's more the bed wetting that's becoming more of an issue. Poor little thing gets so upset at being woken up soaking wet but then it is his own fault. I just wish he would put two and two together and realise ...nob playing = wet bed.

Have you tried a sleeping bag or does he just undo them?

Phoenix76 · 24/05/2018 00:01

No experience of this, sounds tough 💐 have you tried a different nappy brand? Maybe put some pants on top of his nappy. For now, you’re probably already doing this, a water proof mattress protector. I think sleeping bag sounds like a good idea but I can imagine if it’s hot it could be tricky. He’s still so little so he won’t be able to link the cause and effect scenario. Maybe a toy to cuddle instead of fidgeting with his new discovery, good luck op I can only imagine how stressful that is.

Sleeping bag on backwards?

Penfold007 · 25/05/2018 07:07

Thin cotton sleepsuit, you can put it on backwards if necessary.

I'm in Cyprus. I have a 19 month old ds who likes taking his nappy off. It's been very hot here and he sleeps as Harry suggested.

However, I put a pair of thin cotton briefs over his nappy. Got them in a bigger size so they fit. I think they're age 3 and I got his favourite characters. He doesn't touch his nappy when he has his spiderman pants on!

mountaingirl220 · 25/05/2018 20:28

Yes, to bigger pants. Also what helps is I put a Kotex maxi pad (no wings) in his nappy. It catches any extra wee. Also, I stopped feeding his bottle of milk before bed and give it after dinner (before bath and reading/bedtime). For the eczema, my baby had something similar and I started using the oatmeal aveeno for his bath and then slather the area in Sudocrem every night. It really helped. I've also heard that mallow lotion helps soothe eczema really well too.

Thank you all so much for the tips. Will be giving those a try over the next few days.

When DC went through a thankfully brief stage of this we used to put him in an all in one uv swimsuit that has a zip up the back. The ones which are shorts and short sleeved so he didn't get too hot. A couple of weeks of that seemed to break the habit.
