Hi all, my dd will be 2 on 20/8 and I was wondering if her speach & learning was advanced for this age, She can count to ten, knows her alphabet to p (from memory can't recognise letters yet) although when she see's writing she tels me they are letters. Can recite twinkle twinkle, 12345, the hokey cokey, I hear thunder & many more nursery rhymes, songs & t.v theme tunes !!!!!!!!!!! word perfect. reconises loads of tv characters and can name them all (is a bit of a cbeebies addict I'm afraid). In general conversation makes sentances of up to 6 words. I know that you shouldn't compare children but sometimes she just amazes me with what she knows people also asume she is older as her speach is advanced. She is also excellent at the wooden puzzles but think it is done from memory. She has a long attention span and will sit through an entire dvd witout moving and painting/colouring will occupy her for some time!. I don't want to sound like a boasting mother but I dont have alot of contact with other children of this age and only know the guidelines in books etc...... so what do you think is she advanced or am I just a proud mummy who can't beleive how fast her little girl is growing up?

She sounds pretty much like my dd though she isn't that interested in tv/dvds, tends to wander off and do imaginary play etc. She will be 2 on 4 Sept so pretty close in age.

She can string fairly long sentences together now (daddy, no, stop that and come HERE!! Mummy look those trees are really enormous! (that one surprised me yesterday)) - and her counting etc is very good, she often says thing like "Look, three cows" (and there are three cows there!) She is a puzzle maniac too. She can sing lots of nursery rhymes too. She has also started saying me, my, your, yours etc.

Not sure if that's normal or not, she seems to chatter more than her friends of a similar age but that may just be because she doesn't have a shy bone in her body! It is scary how fast they grow up isn't it?

Maybe a bit of both!

She does sound like a smart little thing.

My youngest is a bit the same. She's 28 months, and constantly amazes me. Her sister, who is nearly 5, was also "advanced" in some things like knowing her letters and numbers, but other things took a bit longer. This one though is astounding. She knew all her colours at 18 months!

Enjoy your little girl!

Our children are all so different and at 2yo I am not sure it is possible to know if they are advanced or not. MY DD sounds very similar to yours. She is now 2y 4m but around her second birthday could do much of the same things your DD could do:

  • she could recite numbers 1-10 (she is stuck currently at 14 as she hasn't worked out that fifteen is correct, but nots fiveteen inw rong)
  • she could actually physicall ocount to about 6 consistently
  • she knows many of her colours
  • she doesn't know her alphabet to recite but does recognise about 5 or 6 different letters
  • she has a massive vocab of hundreds and talks in fulls sentences (several words at a time)
  • she is using past, present and future tenses (regular, gets irregular ones wrong)
  • she can hold conversations with most people (her language is clear enough for strangers to follow)
  • she can sing loads of songs by heart, and knows some of her story books by heart too
  • she isn't keen on puzzles though, prefering to play with things like her dolls and make-believe, dress up type games
  • she will sit and "read" for a while at a time, either on her own or with us
  • she knows basic shapes like square, circle and rectangle

and so on...

I have the same thing that because of DD's speech people do assume she is older than her 2 years. Sometimes that seems like a lovely nice thing; other times I long for my little baby too.

So, if you read lots of the development threads on here you will find that they are all different and do things at entireeely different speeds. More often than not these even out once children are all at school. For some children they will continue to fly, for others it may peter out. Who knows where our children will end up???

Just keep encouraging her and keeping every day fun, and she will continue to develop, all being well.

I love the conversations I can now have with my DD

Enjoy your little girl!

I was just going to say the same thing Kate .

My youngest is 3 1/2 now, but although physically behind he is disabled and uses a wheelchair), he is v ahead in other ways. His speech and language for example, was assessed by his portage worker as being up their with kids of 5. I think it has probably helped having 3 older siblings though, but he did know his colours by the age of 2, can count pretty high, that sort of stuff. Uses v long sentences ( non stop talker).

I would just take great pleasure in seeing your dd grow and blossom, don't worry if things are going too fast or too slow

Thanks for the replies, I will just sit back and enjoy watching my dd grow.........her favourite words at the moment are fantastic and gorgeous...so everything is either fantastic or gorgeous.........nice when she's refering to me.
The thing that makes me giggle are her alternatives for the word no.
1: Not tonight or 2: in a minute
