8 month old not sitting up or rolling over - should I be worried?

My dd2 is just over 8 months and won't sit up at all, even if I prop her up she screams and flings herself backwards! Should I be worried? Her sister sat unsupported at 6 months and was crawling at this stage, but dd2 won't lie on her front or prop herself up on her hands - she can't roll over either. I am getting worried as she wants to be upright as she is interested in her surroundings and she cries if I lie her down for too long so I end up carrying her ALL the time and its hard with a 2 year old to entertain as well. Is there anyone with experience of this or who has any hints or tips to help her? (She was born on time and is 25th centile in weight). My HV said I should put her on her front more, but she really screams so I feel cruel. Any advice?

My friend's baby was like this. At 8.5 months he had never rolled or sat up, and hated being on his tummy. A week later he sat up by himself, as solid as a rock, and is now a confirmed bum shuffler! Still hasn't rolled, but no one is worried. I am sure your DD is fine but I bet you are knackered

i gues it is reassuring that she has an interest in her surroundings - and gets frustrated if she cannot get what she wants. my hunch is that there is nothing to worry about (yeah, silly thing to say to a mum, i know!), and that as nine said she will suddenly progress. What is she like in a high chair? perhaps that is an idea - she could sit there playing with her toysor having a snack? Or one of those bumbo seats (cant think what their actual name is!)

Hi Canary. Please try not to worry.I know it is hard. They are all different. My first did things MUCH earlier than my second and it is easy to compare the two and worry.FWIW dd did not get her sitting balance until 9 months, and did not roll until a year. She has never enjoyed being on her tummy.I was also very concerned.Likewise she did not start moving anywhere until 15 months when she discovered she could bum shuffle!!!Now 17.5 months she is still not attempting to pull up or furniture walk but scoots around rapidly on her backside.I was worried and took her to hv who reassured me.ds on the other hand walked at a year, was crawling at 6 months and sitting independently.HTH.

Some babies just don't like rolling. Dd (13mths) hates being on her front, so instead of rolling and crawling she went for the bum-shuffling option at around 12mths. Personally I would say that if your dd doesn't like being on her front then don't make her.

My DS didn't sit unaided until he was about 9 or 10 months. Hated 'tummy time' and he only half-rolled. He bum-shuffled and walked late but he's physically fine now and you wouldn't know. All children are different (my 2 DDs are early sitters/crawlers) but do ask to be referred to a paediatrician if you are really concerned though it doesn't sound like a problem to me, esp as she is generally inquisitive.

Thanks for all the reassurance. When she is in her high chair she just slumps to one side so I try to prop her up. She isn't very interested in solids, but saying that she did eat quite a lot this morning! I'm not making her lie on her front as I can't bear seeing her face - very cross and I don't see what upsetting her will achieve. I'll be patient and wait for her check at 9 months. Thanks again I am feeling a bit more relaxed about it, its hard though. I am developing one very muscly arm from all the carrying though !!

Hi Canary, i know exactly how your feeling as i was in your position 6 weeks ago, my ds3 was exactly the same, he is now 9months 3weeks and the past 2 weeks he is sitting up, rolling over, and has about 10 mins tummy time without screaming. You wait and see in a few weeks it will be a nightmare just trying to put her nappy on xx

My DS is 8 and a half months and isn't sitting unaided, doesn't roll ( he hates being on his tummy - he CAN roll off his tummy on to his back though!) and certainly isn't interested in crawling. He is a a bit slow, but so was his sister. She started bum shuffling at 12 months and only walked at 17 mths.

Things were not helped by the doctor saying he was 'concerned' at his 8 month check. But he is making progress and he'll get there in the end I'm sure. His sister sprints everywhere these days, so I'm gonna make the most of this time to have a rest!
