Just had my nephew to saty for the weekend and have noticed his speech is still very baby like. My Dp really struggles to understand what he says. I have noticed it before but just presumed it would improve as he got older however he due to start school in Sept and it seems to be getting worse. What should i advise my sis to do. Would he need to see a speech therapist ?

Has she actually mentioned anything about being concerned? Is he at nursery , if it was a problem they would have commented surely?
My dd2 has very unclear peech but is improving now , nothing much was done prior to her starting school and then them pushing as well as me, but the SALTs reaction now is(without saying) that she could have done with it earlier.

If he goes to pre-school it will probably get referred from there but AFAIK these things aren't treated much before school age as there are so many kids whose speech improves at school anyway.

However I'm not an expert, I think someone on here is a SALT though, hope they'll be along....

A friend's ds had a few weeks of speech therapy in the term just before he started school and it has helped. I don't think it's anything to worry about particularly but maybe just ask your sis if she is worried about it..

Can you describe what you mean by baby-like?

my ds' speech is often hard to understand, well to anyone outside the immediate family anyway. my ds is a few months younger than your dn.

I can understand soem things but sometimes if he retelling a tale and he has a lot to remember and tell then it sounds like complete nonsense. ISister not said she concerned but i guessed she use to it. My dd 2 is much clearer than him. Some sentences can sound like another languagee literally. He is at nursery a couple of hours but they not said anything. I just thought if people who don't speak to him often can't undersatnd him, like dp then is it something to act on. Although ds 5 has no problems understanding him.

I notice my dd2s more after someone else has commented/I'vehad to interpret for her so maybe your sis will be a bit more aware of it ?

Have you talked to your siter about it?
Her HV can refer her for salt if you are all worried.Waiting lists are long so better to do sooner rather than later. You can always canncelif things don't improve.

(Am a salt btw.)

lilyloo it might be worth chatting to your SIL about it. dd2 is 4 and has been seeing salt for over a year now, dd3 speech at 2years old is catching up fast and a lot clearer already.

Thanks all i have mentioned it to her. She wasn't really that worried but thinks she may have become use to it now. Does she just tell h visitor then?
