Can teething really be that painful?!

My dd who is 8mths wakes up almost every night in pain with her teeth. Even when I give her Calpol she still screams for ages, sometimes 3 hours and nothing seems to calm her. Is this normal? They don't seem to bother her as much during the day.

Oh God I hope not! My ds is 8 mnths and still no teeth. I am dreading it as I have hard the later they start to teeth, the harder their gums are and the more discomfort they cause...I will watch with interest

Mmmm that is a long time but my DS (9 months) does his teething at night too

Have you tried those powder things? I think they're Ashton and Parsons?? Sometimes they work sometimes they don't.
I don't know if it would be recommended for teething but you can alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen every 3 hours, I would try it if my DS was in that much pain.
Maybe she is so upset because she is so tired, poor little thing

Razor-sharp edges pushing through tender gums? Yes, it can really be that painful. Part of it may also be because it's distressing as well as painful; she doesn't understand what's happening or why it hurts.

You probably find yourself that if you're not feeling good, it always feels worse at night - maybe it's the same for babies as well when they wake up in the dark, in pain, and feeling unsettled.

absolutely normal. During the day she's distracted. Overnight she's tired and everything hurts more.

Try medised and nurofen. If she won't take them try putting them into a bottle of milk. Either that or put calgel onto her gums first. You can double dose nurofen and paracetamol medicines. You could also see if she's hungry - maybe a growth spurt? I know the arguments about feeding overnight but if it works and it gets you some sleep it might be worth it.

My friends DD2 is completely inconsolable for days before a tooth actually cuts...she just screams constantly until the tooth breaks through...I think they all suffer differently...hoping my ds 7 months doesn't have the same problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 11/05/2007 21:59

My dd is 15 months and still only has 4 teeth. They've been hell to get through, and we have had 2 weeks of disturbed nights for presumably her 5th tooth, which still hasn't appeared!

We give calpol and nurofen, and if she's lucky she gets an extra bf to take her mind off it whilst the medicine is taking effect!

worleyhurley · 11/05/2007 22:23

omg i hope it isnt a case of the later they start teething the harder their gums and more painfull it is!! my ds2 is 10.5 months and no signs of any teeth still...

i've been saying to ds1 that ds2 will have a tooth and day soon for about the past 12 weeks!!

As I was growing up I always got earache as my teeth came thru - and still do as my wisdom teeth have a spurt of pushing thru. That could be adding to the pain of teeth physically cutting through.

superloopy · 11/05/2007 22:30

I've got a wisdom tooth slowly coming through and some days it hurts like a bitch!! I get an annoying earache too!!

So to answer your question yes I do think it hurts!!

Thanks everyone! I was getting worried that maybe something else was wrong with her as she is the first baby in my family to be as bad with teeth as this. She has two bottom teeth which didn't really seem to faze her too much but I think she has the top two coming and they are driving her mad. We have tried everything from teething mixes, to herbal remedies, and calpol, neurofen etc but nothing seems to work. Cannot wait till they are through so we can all get some rest!
