Speech issues

Wondered if anyone could advise if this is an issue which needs intervention. My 3 year old can not pronounce her k’s And g’s. I was told this is a common issue and she would grow out of it. She’s just about to start nursery so hopefully she will, however I’ve noticed a few other speech issues. For example she doesn’t say “I want you to (do something..)”. She just says “I wayou” fairly drawn out. She also says traw troll instead of paw patrol even though she can say her p’s normally without an issue. She also drools a lot and sucks her thumb - only at night now but she sucks it a lot during the night and does have a fairly big overbite. Not sure if this could cause speech issues.

Looking at other posts on speech therapy I’m aware that there are a lot of children with much more severe speech issues so not sure if the minor issues my dad has needs help? My dd has a lot of words and understands a lot but I’m still a bit concerned about these and if she needs extra help want to make sure she gets it.

Is she only just three or closer to four?

RebelRebel79 · 02/04/2018 20:28

Only just 3. I mentioned it at her 2 year check with hv who said she would grow out of it but no signs of her doing so yet

I think it's quite common, although I am not a professional, just a mum of 3. My first born had very unclear speech, definitely at late 2, but annoyingly I can't remember what she was like by 3. My third is 2.5 and very unclear. I think some sounds don't come until 7 in some kids - there's a chart online somewhere

Hopefully a SALT will post!

my daughter had this . I think they called it delayed sound so she would say the wrong sound at the beginning of the word as thats what she heard so the and them would be pronounced yer and yem. She was assessed eveey few monthe but outgrew it.There were other sounds but cant remember the others such a long time ago!!

It doesn't sound worrying to me but I'm not an expert although had a dd with pronunciation issues. As the previous poster said there is a lot online regarding what sounds are expected when. I'd just pop along to a salt drop in. I think most hv centres hold them. We had salt and it made an amazing difference

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll just leave for now then and wait until she’s been in nursery for a few months and see how she is progressing.
