First words - anyone else's children not used "labels"?

My DS is 15mths old and has a few words but they are all "communicating" words like hello, that, yes, and tank (thank you). He doesn't say any labelling words like book, dog, cup etc (although he does say mummy daddy and nanny)? I am not particularly worried as he is using the words he does at appropriate times. It just seems contrary to all the things I have read about first words.

Interested to hear any thoughts on this?

my ds was like this - it was if he didn't see a lot of point in telling us that something was a dog/horse/car/whatever, as we obviously already knew. His first word was "hungry"! Soon followed by "uh oh" "oh no" "dropped" "down" "up" "more" ... We did get "milk" and "drink" quite early on - but used in the I want some.... sense rather than just to name things.

It's only a problem if first words are distinctly strange and don't include mummy daddy anything social such as bye bye. DS1 started with normal words, daddy, duck, quack, garden, bye bye etc. he then stopped speaking. when he started again those words had gone to be replaced by things like triangle, trapezium, equals and divided by. That DID indicate a problem.

I knew DS2 was fine his earliest favourite word was "no".

ds first word aside from mama, etc at 11 mths was purple. his fave toy was called purple turtle,
I figure this is why!
dd is 21 mths now her first word was tea, as in cup of tea. Before even labelling mum and daddy she said tea at about 12 mths from memory

DDis 11 months & her 1st word at 10 months was 'cat'.She has occasionally said 'daddy',but only when on her own in her cot 1st thing in the morning. Her other words so far are;dog,Jakey (dogs name),good girl & all gone.

Dog & cat are definately her favourites-she will say dog even if she hears one barking, but can't see it.I don't think she'll ever say mummy.

Dd's first word was 'dice' for dog. She followed that with a mixture of 'label' words and 'action' words, i.e. she'd say cat, cup, hot, cold etc. but at the same time as developing words like 'pick up', 'all gone', etc. Does he respond to you asking him to name things in books, i.e. if you say 'can you see a dog?' can he point to it? If so, then I wouldn't be too worried. As Twiglett says when the language does start to flow (all being well of course) it won't stop. Dd is 22 months now and talks from the first thing in the morning to the last thing at night. When there's no-one to talk to, she talks to herself. .

Thanks for all your replies - they are all individuals I guess! When I ask him where things are he looks at them or goes and gets them but he just won't say any of the words. LunarSea I think you have hit the nail on the head when you say he just doesn't see the point .. Whenever my friends ask him to repeat things he just looks at them like they are complete morons as in "why on earth should I say that if I don't want to?"
