Is my precious first born a genius (!) or is this utterly normal?!!

My dd is nearly 10 months old. I say 'clap' she claps her hands.

Er, that's it really but I'm impressed! Is this advanced linguistic comprehension or completely normal/on target. I have no other frames of reference as all my firend's babies are older than mine and they can't rememnber anything!

ds1 is 13 and could wave at 4 months and speak in sentences at 18 months. sadly he's perfectly normal - not a genius at all!

Can't remember when either DS or DD did it but I think it sounds normal rather than genius (although obviously your baby is very lovely ).

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 21:43

Well if yours is a genius then so is mine! She walked at 9 months and was clappign before that so blimey she's an absolute genius!

It's lovely that your DD is calpping, enjoy!

Blu · 08/05/2007 21:46

Of course your baby is a genius! How can these litle tiny humans learn so fast? It's a miracle. Enjoy the moment!
(and who cares whether they all do things of their own which delight and entrance their parents...the point is YOUR baby is doing it!)

Vanessa1969 · 08/05/2007 21:46

babybore, I think you have the next Einstein in your home. Be careful...

babybore · 08/05/2007 21:49

Haha so funny that I thought she was exceptionally advanced! It wasn't the fact that she was clapping it's just that she understood what 'clap' means when I said it... ah well. Proud mum syndrome strikes again

See - that's why we all love Blu. She says the perfect things. Scrap my post - I ditto Blu. God I love that woman!

fortyplus · 08/05/2007 21:51

You just keep being proud of everything she does

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 21:51

You have every right to e very prod of her. Keep going and keep posting. Blu is right - she is a genius, yor genius

Wallace · 08/05/2007 21:54

How sweet She probably understands more than you realise - try asking her where daddy/mummy/the dog is, and see if she looks around for said person!

deaconblue · 08/05/2007 22:12

absolutely a genius (says mother of 12 month old who whacks his tummy instead of clapping)

Twinklemegan · 08/05/2007 22:14

My 9 month old doesn't clap yet, but if you ask him to blow you a kiss he does it, with a raspberry thrown in for good measure.

UniSarah · 09/05/2007 20:39

Just wait till she get the idea that its VERY funny to do something OTHER than what you ask her to do.
At that age boy would wave every time he heard the words bye bye.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 09/05/2007 21:17

think its normal, but all children are complete geniuses whenever they do things!!

my dd never got the clap on command thing for ages but could talk in sentences at 18 month, now at 2 1/2 she counts up to 16 and sings the alphabet, not a genius but a bloody pita, she wants to know everything sigh!
