Hi, I need help x I have a 6 year old daughter who takes forever to eat a meal unless she has a insentive . Me and her dad gives her 20 minutes to eat her dinner ( and may I add it's things that she loves ) and she plays up every single night by taking up to 1 hour and 50 minutes to finish, but if you tell her she is going to get a treat if she eats it all before the 20 min mark she has it done for 15 minutes x I'm at my wits end and I'm very stressed with it all, I dread evening meal time as every night is the same Confused^ what can I do ???^

I'd stop the treats for a start. Stop making your evening meals a drama; give her her dinner and leave her to it. No treats, no incentives. She'll either eat it or not, but don't beg her or cajole. Just take away her plate when she’s finished, or leave her to it at the table as she’s taking so long. You and her dad go somewhere else to do something more interesting - she'll soon get the message.

If it's almost 2 hours, I wouldn't even leave her to it for that length of time. I would probably take it away after 40 mins and offer a chopped apple with peanut butter or a piece of bread and butter whilst DD2 (also 6) got ready for bed, and then she's got till she's about to brush her teeth to eat it. She'll either eat quicker, or if not, at least she doesn't go to bed hungry.

You’re kinder than I am Bee; I wouldn’t offer anything else as I feel that's just giving the 6 year old back control of dinner time.
