Delayed at 18 months?

My almost 18 month old doesn’t say much. He says Ma Ma or Da Da as two separate words but not together and doesn’t use them to get mine or his Dad’s attention. He says ‘all gone’ every so often (and understands when to use it) and ‘Go’. Should he be saying more? I’m a little worried as well that he doesn’t seem to understand what I ask him. If I say ‘where’s such a thing’ he goes to either his cup or his ball. He understands ‘come here’ but looks blankly at anything else I say to him. He doesn’t point, wave or clap and he doesn’t walk yet either and he can’t stack blocks or rings and can’t get objects into small containers (like crayons into the box). He tries but misses by a mile. I must admit I’m getting a little worried now that he’s very behind where he should be. What do you think? Any advice/opinions very welcome! Xx

I have a slow talker (26m and just says mama) and he's get a hearing test soon, has your son had a hearing check? Does he crawl very well? Is he close to walking?

Hi BeeMyBaby. Thanks for the reply. No he hasn’t had a hearing test yet. Is that usually around 2 years old? It might be worth asking though as it’s very hit and miss whether he responds to his name. I usually have to shout it. He does crawl well and cruises well too. He doesn’t have much balance if I stand him up in the middle of the room and will drop straight to his knees. He’s taken a couple of steps but is very reluctant but again doesn’t seem to have much balance - he leans forwards almost immediately so falls over. Same if I hold one of his hands - he falls forwards straight away. He won’t even use a wooden push along toy!

Does he wear shoes? As sometimes this can unbalance them. You just ask your health visitor and they will refer your dc to audiology for a hearing test, it's not routine.

My boy is 17 months and doesn't say any obvious words, just mama/dada and random babble, hes the same with 'wheres the thing' he'll go for something completely different most times.

With the walking hes only just learned it in the past 2 weeks, and he was also reluctant to do it, would pull his hands away from mine and sit down in a temper, turns out he just needed a good get up and go!
I took him to a comic con one day, got him out of his pram and stood him up holding his hands, he instantly started walking like it was no big deal because he was so distracted by what was going on around him to realise what he was doing! After that there was no stopping him, and now hes waddling around pretty quickly.

Might be worth talking to your GP about it and see what they think if youre really worried though?

I have a 19 month dd, still doesn’t walk. She can do it, if I stand her up, I’ll move and call her to me, she can do it. Just chooses to crawl the rest of the time, can’t get from sitting to standing without something to aid her.
HV is coming round tomorrow, I’m not worried about her speech, it is something she does well at. Although I am seeing signs of some sort of sensory disorder, her temper is quite ridiculous. Gets tired easily. She responds to instructions well when she decides to listen, sometimes have to repeat myself a lot when I say her name.
