Hates the lumps!

Hello

Just wanted a bit of advice if possible. My 13 month year old isn’t the biggest fan of the spoon, I think he likes the idea of doing it himself, but he can’t just yet. However feeding him meals with a spoon has become a nightmare. The only things he accepts all the time from a spoon is yoghurt and mashed avocado. He seems to still have an issue with lumps, he just spits it out if I manage to get him to try it. He eats puréed stuff, thick purée pouches and most of the stuff I make him puréed.

He is a champ with finger food, blueberries, peas satsuma, roasted sweet potato, peppers, toast, bread, sometimes tomatoes, cucumber, chips, raspberries he eats no issues. He’ll always try finger food even if he does spit it out every now and then.

It’s a little strange because we will have a few days where he will eat everything he’s given, here or at nursery and Sometimes he just doesn’t want anything savoury from a spoon, I would say he much prefers purée.

He has been poorly on and off the last couple of months and has been teething, do I just carry on with purées and finger food till he decides he will eat other things?

Thank you

Sorry just to add - his weight has been dropping a bit, (he’s quite dinky in general) but I do put that down to being a bit poorly too, he’s been at the 25th and is dropping to between there and the 9th, the HV said they weren’t too concerned because he was born on the 9th and could just be adjusting to where he was originally

How about you just let him eat finger food and maybe bits of your meals, and ditch the purée? It'll be messy until he can work out cutlery but it may be better for the long run.

Yeah I have thought about that, just worry about how much he will eat, but I guess I’ll know if he’s hungry - thank you

Dd2 was that. She never did eat the lumpy food. She'd take the absolute slop, or finger food. Go for finger food.
She's now a teenager and eats much better than her sister who was a champ at weaning.
