Baby hysterical while changing nappies and changing

My little 5 week old hates being changed. Sometimes it's just crying, sometimes he looks so distressed it's heartbreaking. Imagine a hundred cats, and then the same hundred cats being skinned alive- this is sort of a noise level he sometimes reaches.
We tried distracting him with a toy (fail), wiping with water wipes dipped in warm water (fail), singing, making sounds playing music (all fail). Sometimes he already starts crying when you start undoing his sleep suit, like if he had sixth sense and knows what is about to come.
Funnily enough, he has not cried when we changed him twice at the midwife's, and last week I was talking about it to a lady in the local children centre, she asked me to change him so that she could observe. And of course, not a squeal from him!!! Go figure, I have not been doing anything differently!
Same goes with drying after the bath.
The problem, except for the crying, is that we change him before feeding, and as he gets into that state, that influences the way he eats (gulps food down rather than drinking properly because of his heavy breathing),

Maybe he’s hungry if you’re changing him before a feed? You could try giving him some milk (one breast/ an ounce or 2 of milk) to take the edge of his hunger, then wind him and change him then give the rest of the feed.
I always change 4 week old DS mid feed as I can guarantee eating stimulates his bowels so he always fills his nappy. Sometimes he then fills it again so I have to change him after he’s fed as well 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mine still hates it at 10.5mo!

You’re stopping them playing, exposing them to cold air, making them stay still while you change the nappy... who would like any of that?

I give DS a bath toy to play with while I change him. He also likes being sung to or me pulling faces at him. It’s perfectly normal though, you aren’t doing anything wrong.

My DS hated them until he was about 7 or 8 weeks old and then he seemed to not mind them anymore- think this coincided with a developmental leap? Really hope your little one starts to accept them, it's early days for them! :)
