Unusual movements 10mo

My 10 month old has had (what I would describe) as unusual movements for months - I hoped they would settle down but am now beginning to get concerned as none of my friends’ babies seem to do the same (one once asked if she was ok when seeing her do this).

Mainly it’s extending and tensing the arms while twirling wrists, same with legs, usually when frustrated or wants something. At the same time her cry sounds strained.
She also usually seems to look down/keeps her neck bent.
Now has also started to scrunch-up face and ‘gurn’.

I know this may sound like stimming, but that it would be too early to tell is it’s ASD.

I just really want to know if anyone else’s babies do this do? Can it be normal?

Ds2 is 1 next week. He has been twirling his hands and feet for ages. I've not thought anything of it tbh. He's very forward in all other ways and a remarkably chilled out baby. He rolled at 3 months on the dot and is walking.

Thank you - I think it’s more the repetitive tensing/extending of the arms and legs that’s worrying me. I’ve seen lots of babies doing the twirling but never the tensing (apart from on YouTube of babies who were apparently later diagnosed with ASD...)
She’s not really communicating either (pointing etc), or responding to her name.

you seem to be concerned. could you film it and show it to the GP? difficult to picture what exactly she is doing. hopefully this will put your mind to rest.

I've shown the GP but she just said something along the lines of babies do strange things.
I think I was hoping someone would come along and say their LO does the same but think I'm just going to have to wait and see what happens when she gets older.

It's v young to worry about pointing .
Mine didn't until 21 months

agree, pointing isn't something many do are 10 months but it is usually expected to 18 months. is her hearing ok, OP?

That’s reassuring- thank you. Yes hearing seems to be fine, thought she had started to respond to her name around 7 months but no progress since. She does play peek a boo.
Hopefully the tensing is just a quirk of hers.

I know lots of babies who do this - it’s normally excitement and nothing to worry about.

Oh and sometimes it’s because they’re having a poo! Does it coincide with this?

Thanks Don’t - she definitely does it when doing a poo, but also any time she is frustrated/upset with something (particularly when she’s in her highchair). She’ll do it repetitively until I take her out or give her the toy back etc.
It sometimes makes me on edge when playing with her or taking her out, as she really looks strange when she does it and I imagine people are wondering what’s wrong with her!

I had the same worries about my DS as he did exactly what you’re describing. It seemed to start around 8 months If I remember correctly. Everyone told me it was normal and I now see the pattern of when he does it, and for him at least, it’s definitely excitement/pooing, though my OH has also just said he does it if we take a toy away (i.e. just before he starts to cry!). You could ask a HV if you’re still worried but I think it’s very common.

Hi Captain, I think you must be thinking about someone else - this was my first post on MN.
I’ve tried searching for something similar but hadn’t found anyone describing the same thing I was concerned about.

Twirling wrists and looking at hands is a totally normal developmental phase. All three of my dc did it, and the dc I nannied.
