3 yr old wakes up at sparrowfart

He's awake every morning, without exception, at 5:30. He then wakes his sister, who goes mad & then us. Ds is a stubborn little cuss & will not be persuaded to play by himself until a more reasonable hour. Also, he's tired again by 9 & gets really grouchy. Any advice?

Star chart for 'staying in bed quietly' (or even going back to sleep!!) My ds would never do this either until dd1 came along - she just happened to wake up 1 1/2 hrs after him and he just seemed to tune into her times instead. V odd - it does pass I promise - he was a 5.30am bird too.....grrrr

poor ds - he's now yawning his head off while watching the Early Worms.

Lock his door?

sauce · 30/04/2007 11:10

LOL! Are you kidding?! He'd knock the bloody door down AND raise the dead by his yelling & screaming.

It was a half-serious comment only

You could try putting blackout blinds in his room. I put some on my ds's windows and it's basically pitch dark in there now. I got cheapo ones from Asda, they do cream or navy, and it only took about 1 hour to put them both up (and I'm hamfisted).

ceolas · 30/04/2007 13:59

Oh yes, if you haven't already got them blackout blinds are wonderful.

Ds (nearly 4) often wakes up early. If he comes in to our room we tell him to go away and then ignore him (assuming there is nothing wirong!). He knows he can do whatever he likes in his own room until 7.00 when he is free to make as much noise as he likes (and does). If he comes back again or makes enough noise to wake up his sister sanctions are imposed (this would usually be deying him a story in our bed when he wakes up on the grounds that we will now be too tired). This might sound draconian, but we went for a long time with little or no sleep so were desperate. Must say it does not seem to be working too badly for us.

LOL! Love the thread title!

(Sorry, just had to say that)

it is annoying when they wake early. I have neighbours who put their kids to bed (age 5 and 3)at 5pm so they usually wake ds up around 5am when they wake up making loads of row. I am sure you don't put you lo to bed at 5pm!

Does he have a nap in the day still? (Ds does sometimes at 2.4)Maybe drop this.

sorry but I love your thread title!!

Love the thread title too. DS1 is the same, always has been I'm afraid...wakes anywhere between 5-30 and 6am. Comes into bed with us but v rarely goes back to sleep. Won't go back in room, tried all sorts of tactics and bribery.
He's just totally awake.
Tried later bedtimes, but has absolutely no effect. He's 4 BTW and goes to bed at 7-7.30.
Can't suggest anything I'm afraid as blackouts don't work for us, his body clock just shouts 'Ta-dah' at 5.30 and that's that.

How old is he BTW?
You could try the bunny clock, star charts, 'magic light' (bedside light on timer and he can only come out of bedroom when the light comes on - worked for my sis with her two, but she is very scary when woken up so I'd stay in bed too). Sis also had stair gate on bedrooms too , she does love her lie-ins!!

Try this it worked wonders for us in a similar situation. You set the blue bit for when you want them in bed and the yellow bit for when it's ok to get up.
