How do I do control crying for my 23mth old DS in a bed??? (rather than from a cot!)

I've put a 'big bed' in my 23 month old DS's room and I'd like him to eventually move into it from his cot. At the moment, I let him sleep in the cot at night, but am trying to get him to sleep in the bed during the day. So night time, he'll go down perfectly - no crying just goes to sleep on his own.

But daytime he has started to cry - I think I have been confusing him! Sometimes I have put him in the bed if he has fallen asleep from a walk or drive. Other times he has asked to sleep in the bed, so have tried to put him in - but end up lying next to him until he goes to sleep. Today I have put him in the cot - and he cried for about 15 mins before going to sleep.

So my question is, how do you do control crying when putting them in a bed? And should I be more consistent and put him in the bed at night as well?

I put dd1 in a bed when she was about 2.2. She was very excited about being in a big girls bed. I made it like a pressie to her when we moved house tho. Have you asked him what he thinks and if he'd like to go in it etc????

I'm not sure if this is a situation where "controlled crying" will be useful for.

I would just take away the cot and start putting him to sleep in the bed, day and night.

aquablue, I am at the moment moving ds from cot to bed (have taken sides of cot).
He usually has a day time nap in his cot, but I have dropped this as I know he wont stay in the bed for it!
I have been putting him to bed as normal with a stairgate fixed on his door so he can't get out. I packed all his toys away and just let him drop off in his room, usually the floor!
I don't like the idea of sitting with children when putting them to bed as I believe this will install bad habits. ie mummy stay with me until I am asleep!
