6 month old- something not right?

Life hasn't been the easiest for my little one since they were born, they arrived 5 weeks early so we were all a bit shellshocked, and they then had silent reflux for a few months that gaviscon helped with.
They were generally unhappy for the first few months (pretty much cried/screamed for the first 3/4 months) and although they settled a bit after this, they've never been a content baby.

They will smile and giggle if something amuses them but the majority of the day they're whining or crying. I can put them down to play for at most 3 minutes (front, back, side, sitting makes no difference) before they're whining and want to do something different and the cycle starts again.

They do get tired throughout the day but we've been working a lot on sleep and get approx 11 hours at night and then 2-3 in the day so I just think it's more than that.

I'm exhausted every day as all I do is pick up, carry around (won't go in a sling, just me carrying them) or take them for a walk as the only ways to temporarily stop the whining or crying.

Could there be an underlying issue? All I want is my baby to be happy and content and I'm going out of my mind. All the other babies their age seem to be so much happier Sad

My son was like this but improved when we weaned and discovered he had food intolerances. (One of the allergies was lactose intolerance so less milk after weaning resulted in happy baby)

@jaimelannistersgoldenhand I had to give up dairy for a while when he was little but slowly reintroduced and he seemed to take to it fine. He has cows milk now as part of weaning in porridge etc and doesn't seem any worse after food so I assumed it wasn't that? He's just so grumpy all the time! Sad

The contents of his nappy and frequency of vomiting compared to his older sibling made me investigate intolerances.

Is he getting showing signs that he might get more mobile soon? Is he teething?
