4 week old with colic

My 4 week old baby is really struggling at the minute bringing wind up and is in pain most of the day bringing his legs up and constantly crying unless I'm holding him. I went to the doctors yesterday morning and the GP prescribed colief (well, recommended as it's no longer available on NHS)

I bought it and it's made no difference up to now, can anyone advise whether it takes a bit of time to start working? Also, can I use infacol alongside the colief or is there no point doing this? I feel like I'm winding him almost until his next feed and nothing is coming up. Night feeds have been awful.

I've ordered MAM anti colic bottles which should be here at some point today so I'm hoping they help, I'm using tommee tippee closer to nurture at the min. Would changing milks be a good idea? Maybe comfort milk?

I'm desperate and need my little boy to stop being in painSad x

How is he now Hannah? I was just wondering if he’s been checked for Tongue Tie?

@EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic thanks for the reply x he is a tiny bit better which I think is down to new bottles as less is air is getting into him, but still looks to be in pain and feeding time/winding time is a nightmare.

He actually does have a very minor tongue tie, the HV noticed it when he was around 2 weeks old and told me it should probably correct itself. I had no idea this could be linked! Could this be the cause? X

It could very well be adding to your problems if not causing them. Have a read of Hidden Cause of feeding problems - however you feed your baby and see if the symptoms sound familiar Smile

My DS was exactly the same at that age, except he would vomit when the wind finally came out. It turned out he had reflux and Cows Milk Protein Allergy. He ended up on a prescription formula and taking infant gaviscon, ranitidine then in the end omeprazole which settled the acid fairly well.
Some tips on what got me through 8 months of colic hell:
MAM bottles, I found Tommee Tippee made trapped wind worse.
Constant winding until he was sitting up at 6 months then I began to wind less as it was coming up on its own.
Keeping him upright after feeds for 40 minutes to stop the acid coming back up.

Cycling his legs while he was sat on my lap to help shift wind.
Using a baby swing.
Propping his cot up so he was sleeping at an angle rather than flat on his back to stop the acid.

These are just some things you could try I case some of his discomfort could be caused by reflux and acidity as well as wind as you said he prefers you to hold him, sounds like my DS who would prefer anything that stopped him being laid flat.

Hang in there. Colic is awful and so draining but it will get better!

@NotGoingToPlan funnily enough I rang my HV yesterday because I was confused about what comfort milk to buy - when explaining all of the baby's symptoms she said it sounds exactly like a cows milk protein allergy - he's had a rash on his front, back and face for just over a week now and has been really sneezy and had stomach ache with diarrhoea. She advised me to go to my GP and speak with them about getting milk prescribed.

I went to the GP yesterday and the doctor says it's not colic or an allergy but a viral infection/gastroenteritis. I really don't agree though. She's prescribed some dyoralite and advised to come off the milk for 24 hrs and then go back to it and come off the colief.

Since being off the milk he's not had stomach pains really and has been settling more, which makes me think it could be an allergy. If he goes back to being in pain again and vomiting when back on his milk I'm thinking of going to the walk in centre and seeing if they have a difference of opinion and can prescribe some milk.

Hope to get to the bottom of it soon. Thanks for all your advice I will definitely be trying it all x
