When did your baby roll?

I am on a bit of a posting fest here

DD is nearly 6 months old and is showing no signs of rolling ... she is a big pudding! In our coffee group all the other mums put their babies down and almost as one they all flip over while DD lies there flapping her arms and not doing much else!

At her 5 month check the nurse said that DD should be rolling by 6 months and she would be wanting to see her if she wasn't.
She didn't seem to listen when I told her that DS didn't roll until he was 10 months old.

I am not particularly worried as DS rolled over and crawled in the same week at 10 months and is now 4 and a half and walks, runs, plays soccer, jumps off high things etc etc etc ...

Still want to know though, when did your baby/babies roll over???

oh dear don't know if i should post this - DS rolled from tummy to back at 6 weeks, and back to tummy at 4 months. tho he doesn't roll 180 degrees very often, and is more into rolling on his side. DS does hate being on his tummy, and I got told his head control wasn't good enough a couple of months ago, so i guess these babies all have their own way of doing things

Fio2 · 26/07/2004 11:42

they are supposed to roll from side to side at 4 months-ish
and roll all the way over by 6 months-ish

my son rolled at birth from side to side but he is a monkey

dd didnt rollfor ages and ages

I think some children are just more agile than others, dont worry

elliott · 26/07/2004 11:51

ds2 is nearly 8 months and not rolling yet! his brother rolled front to back at 16 weeks and back to front maybe around 5 months ish - always slept on his tummy from that point on. Ds2 on the other hand seems to lie motionless on his back with his hands either side of his head all night long....aaahhh.
tbh I hardly ever put him in a position where he might roll (hates being on his tummy).

wellsie · 26/07/2004 12:32

DS rolled at 5mths but now wish that he hadn't learnt this new trick - now understand the meaning of "eyes in the back of your head"
He is the only one in my postnatel group that is rolling and they're all nearly 7mths now!
So needless to say I'm worrying that he's not like the others in his little group!

binkie · 26/07/2004 12:40

ghosty, this is cut&paste from another thread ...

two more non-rollers here - ds thumped over by accident at about 4 months then not again till past a year. Dd, the most NT child you could ever meet, - I can't actually remember seeing her roll ever, though I guess she can (she's 3). I put it down to them being in sleeping bags at night, so they just didn't get used to wriggling getting them anywhere. Both sat neatly at about 4 months though, crawled at 9/10 months, so their non-rolling was an unusual detail against a picture of generally normal motor development

(so ... your ds is not so unusual, & it sounds like siblings can be alike)

moosh · 26/07/2004 12:56

Ds1 rolled and crawled all in the same week around 7 months and ds2 21 weeks has just started to roll now.I didn't worry with ds1 as he was doing other things and wasn't the slightest bit interested in rolling over and he hated being on his front. But don't let it worry you all babies/children do things at various ages.

fee77 · 26/07/2004 13:05

DD was 7 months - babies will do it when they are good and ready. DD likes to watch others and has done most things "late". I think it is unfair of HV to say go back if not rolling as some babies don't do it till late, and some babies never crawl.

LunarSea · 26/07/2004 13:27

ds rolled back to tummy at 8 weeks, and tummy to back at about 3 months. For some reason he was one of those oddball babies who actually prefered to be on his tummy. He'd quite happily lie for ages on his tummy and push himself up with his arms so that his head and shoulders were off the floor, and he could watch what was going on around him. Guess he'd just got bored of staring at the sky/ceiling and wanted to be able to see more. Did make me panic a bit for a while when he insisted on sleeping on his tummy though - but short of strapping him down there wasn't much I could do to stop it once he sould flip himself over at will.

handbagaddiction · 26/07/2004 18:22

Ghosty,

Hopefully this will make you feel better - dd, who is 10.5 months does not roll yet either! Does roll easily from side to side - can just about roll from front to back BUT there's no way she can do a back to front roll. Hates being on her tummy and at the moment shows no signs of crawling - just uses one handed leveraging to spin herself round in circles!! Also showing no signs of wanting to put weight on her legs..so isn't yet standing either. She was a very early sitter - at 5 months had it completely sussed but doesn't seem to want to do anything else.

I'm fairly relaxed about it though - doctor at her 8 month check said that 'sitting' was by far the most important gross mototr skill to crack and then everything would follow in it's own time. Her fine motor skills are excellent and have been for ages and her speech is pretty good too. However, I've lost count of the number of people who continue to ask me about her crawling ability - and then sympathise when I tell them she doesn't move and tell me not to worry as she will do it her own time - as if I don't know that already!!

colinsmommy · 26/07/2004 18:27

He rolled over once at about a month and a half old, but I'm sure it was some sort of accident. He didn't roll again until over 7 mo. I never thought he would, because he hated tummy time and screamed any time he was on his stomach. When he did roll over it was completely out of the blue. Then he wanted to do it all the time, especially during diaper changes. After a few weeks, he stopped rolling over and didn't do it again until about 10 mo.

Grizzly · 26/07/2004 21:36

DS didn't roll till about 8 months and only started crawling last week (11 months) but within a week has learned how to climb stairs, pull himself up to standing using the sofa, coffee table, me, whatever. He'll walk for ages if I support him. Ghosty - you know from your first child that everything's fine.

Chuffed · 26/07/2004 21:40

dd rolled the first time back to front at about 4wks but didn't do it again until 3 months. Now 4 months can't keep her off her stomach and she is trying desperately to crawl. My cousins baby didn't do anything until about 7 months, then at 9-10months was pulling herself up on furniture trying to walk so it all balances itself out.

johno · 26/07/2004 21:42

my Ds wont roll at all, hes 14 month and hates being on his front, he bum shuffles to get around, but if he over reaches and accidently goes on his stomach you would think hed bashed his face in, screaming and crying, even if his face hasnt touched the floor

johno · 26/07/2004 21:44

my Ds wont roll at all and hes 14 month, he wont go on his tummy

hmb · 26/07/2004 21:46

Dd would roll across the room to get at something she wanted at about 4 months. I neve had that nice phase when they sit up, but can't move.

Best mates kids (2 of them) never rolled until after they were fully mobile.

they are all so different

coppertop · 26/07/2004 21:48

Ds1 was a long and skinny baby who rolled at 4 months. He rolled everywhere until he started crawling at about 8 months. Ds2 was almost the same weight but very chubby. He didn't really get into rolling at all until about 6 or 7 months. Even then he didn't use rolling to get around, but was/is a lot more agile than his brother.

hazlinh · 27/07/2004 02:16

dd (24 weeks now) rolled at about 4 months and has begun to crawl all over the place when she thinks no one's watching!Probably due to the fact that she gets a lot of tummy time, she hates being on her back.prolly feels helpless, the poor mite!

But Ghosty, all babies are different, and one of my nieces never had a crawling phase, and of course ppl like mil were beginning to ask questions!
But she just started walking one day at one plus (can't remember exact age).Up until then she just sat and played all day. My dd still doesn't sit up unsupported yet tho.

Ghosty · 27/07/2004 02:32

Thanks everyone ....
I am so glad that I have a child already because the HV would certainly have worried me if DD was my first baby ....
DD is trying really hard to sit up alone, she needs very little support but does need to have some cushions around as she does topple over to the side after a while so there can't be that much to worry about!
I don't think I will bother taking her back to the HV next week (at 6 months) .... she can see her when she is due for her 9 month check.

HVs are so silly. My hv expressed concern at my dd not rolling over at 11 months. Never mind that she could crawl across the floor faster than you can walk. She just didn't feel like rolling over. She also didn't start walking until 18 mo. She just didn't want to. Things like that have to be looked at along with everything else. If your child is not crawling, rolling over or pulling up at 11 months, then perhaps there is something to be concerned about. But it's silly to just pick on one thing alone.

strangerthanfiction · 27/07/2004 20:43

Dd rolled around 4-5 months I think. But she hated being on her tummy (still does at 21 months ) and never crawled or even tried to. Instead she was more interested in vertical pursuits like sitting up, then pulling up, and she walked holding our hands by 10 months and on her own at a year old. Maybe your dd just isn't into the rolling motion and will be a princess of the vertical like mine was!

HVs really are utterly clueless sometimes.

motherinferior · 27/07/2004 20:50

Ghosty, dd1 did absolutely buggerall for ages. She did her first semi-roll at about six months. Didn't crawl for months after that - everyone kept saying 'oh, she'll miss crawling and go straight to walking' but did she hell, she mooched slowly through crawling and then finally took her first firm steps at about 17 months. She's never been exactly physically adventurous but now walks a good half mile once or twice a day without complaining (she was three in February).

DD2 total little monkey by comparison, bless her.

motherinferior · 27/07/2004 20:51

Oh, and I haven't taken either of them for a checkup for months and months and months. No intention of doing so either.

Jackfrostmanson · 29/07/2004 12:55

My dd (8months)rolled from back to front at 5/6mnths.She still cant roll front 2 back and shows no interest in it.It she is placed on her tummy she will commando crawl. If she is sitting up she cannot get down on to her tum although I think she is trying too nor can she pull her self up from her tum to sit any ideas how I can encourage this?.If she see something she wants and she is sitting she tries to bum shuffle. If she laying on her back and wants something she slides along on her back it look really funny. She is trying to pull herself up to stand and if your hands are near she pulls herself up and protests loudly if you take your hands away and she wants to stand up.
I dont think she can make her mind up how to move around.
Sorry I waffled

bundle · 29/07/2004 12:59

both dds rolled very early - dd1 around 6 weeks if i remember rightly. just goes to show there is no normal, just lots of variations within a group of ordinary children
