8 year old not sleeping

My 8 year old DS has started to have trouble falling asleep. It's been weeks now and it's not getting any better. He goes to bed at his usual bedtime, reads a book and then reads some more... until it's 2 am and he still can't fall asleep. I have to stay up too because he gets distressed knowing he's awake on his own while everyone else is asleep. Me and DH had to come up with sleeping shifts, I stay up with DS at night - I've always been a night owl - and he gets up with the children in the morning while I get a lie in. Still, we're both exhausted.

I have checked everything I can think of but nothing out of the ordinary has happened, all well at school and at home, other than the non-sleeping his behaviour hasn't changed, he's happy/eating/playing/socialising etc. He doesn't have any SEN or MH challenges. But he just can't sleep. I've asked him if he knows why, tried to see if something is scaring/worrying him, but all he says is "I keep trying to sleep but I can't". He does get enough exercise during the day. During the holidays he slept really late in the morning, getting up at 11 or 12, and we let him because at least he was getting enough sleep. But on school days, we literally have to pull him out of bed in the morning. We've seen GP and he didn't find anything wrong, he said it's probably a phase.

We've kept to his routine, nice bath/cuddle time/reading etc, made sure he's eating properly, getting enough exercise. All the usual things you try but still "can't sleep".

Anyone has had to deal with this and any ideas on what might work?

We had this last night with our DD so you have my sympathy. Although she said she wasn’t scared, she went to sleep within 2 minutes of getting into bed with us.
