Can anyone recommend a good speech therapist in London? For my daughter who is nearly two and a half.

Thanks

Hi, you need to look on the ASLTIIP website...here
I'm a SALT but afraid don't know anyone in London working with kids. Hope the website helps.

I've contacted an organisation called Christopher's Place. Have you ever heard of them?

Sorry, no, but would recommend if hiring an SLT they are registered with ASLTIIP. It's important that they have the proper insurance and are actually qualified SLTs.
You can check if an slt is registered to practice on the health professionals council website - HPC
I work with adults so am completely out of the loop on slt with children, so it probably doesn't mean much I haven't heard of the place!

I think there is another slt on mumsnet who posts regularly though, and I'm pretty sure she does work with kids.

Where abouts are you. I use a private SALT in the Orpington area if that is any help - I would certainly recommend her and can supply contact details if you want them. Our daughter is 2yr 7mth and has seen her since last December.

I remember reading an article on Christopher's Place - sounded great. Moondog is a SALT. (I don't stalk, just that I take an interest as a dyslexia tutor with dyslexic ds btw.)

We're based in East London. Maybe I'll send a post to Moondog and see if she picks up.

Christopher's Place does look good but it would be good to get some feedback first.

my friend went to CP- good for general speech problems, not so good if you have developmental concerns.

Genidef · 24/04/2007 22:23

It is speech problems - at this stage.

If you do have other concerns rather than speech I really wouldn't recommend Christopher Place (they're not good at spotting when more is wrong, my friend's experience I know of first hand, I have also come across others who had the same experience). If you have no other concerns then I have heard they're very good. So if your dd has quite good adult directed attention, will repsond well to people playing with her, teasets, blowing bubbles, puppets etc - that sort of thing, then go for it. If you think she won't respond to that then I'd check ASLTIP for 1:1 with a specialist SALT tbh.

I have spoken with my daughter's UK pediatrician who recommended somebody near us, who seems to have all the relevant qualifications. TBH it's much more convenient for us to go with that option, so I think we're going to set Christopher's Place aside for now and see how we get on.

Thanks for your messages - much appreciated.

Glad to hear you've got something sorted. Good luck, and hope your daughter finds it fun.

Genidef · 25/04/2007 17:48

Thanks for that. I have to admit that some people have implied they think we're paranoid - and it may well be it's nothing. I was starting to worry that I was subjecting her to something unneccesary which could cause my daughter some anxiety. But my feeling is this doctor wouldn't just say that without some reason, he's not that sort of person, so it's worth just having an initial visit to see.
