Teething pattern - is it important?

I read somewhere that the pace of teething isn't very important but the pattern is, and that you should consult a dentist if the pattern seems unusual so that potential blockages/cysts can be dealt with as early as possible.

Is this right?

I ask because DD (13 month) has a very strange pattern:

12 weeks - bottom two incisors emerged

9 months - top two incisors emerged

11 months - two teeth next to top two broke through. One came fully out, but the other is still only peeking through two months later.

13 months - now two more teeth have started to emerge but they are molars almost right at the back of her mouth.

So she seems to have had no teeth movement on her bottom gum since the bottom two broke through at 12 weeks! Is this so unusual that she needs to be seen by a dentist?

Gnu

Don't know if this link will help but it gives the expected range of time each tooth will emerge.

DS (9.5 mo) has got his top 2 teeth through but nothing else which EVERYONE keeps telling me is unusual - as if, as a mother, you don't have enough to worry about!

Thanks for that Ceebee. It looks a bit different from one I remember seeing but is more reassuring as it indicates that getting what appears to be her first molars now isn't so unusual. Her sequence is probably a bit odd (skipping the lower lateral incisors), but perhaps not as odd as I had thought.

Gnu, that must be such a worry. perhaps you might take time to peruse this paper:

Thank you puffling. Most searing.

Not sure if this helps but my ds (16 months) had a similar patter except he got three of the bottom front teeth and not the fourth, he had these three by a year old (dec 06), since then he has had no new teeth and i was worrying this 4th bottom front tooth was missing but in the last fortnight he had a back molar cut through then last week this 4th bottom front tooth, so was a good 4 months between these two teeth spurts.

I know this is an old thread so I hope someone picks up on it.

My dd is 6 months old and cut her first tooth a week before her 4 months' birthday and has since got a second one on her bottom jaw.

I noticed on Saturday that a third tooth has cut through - but it is not one of her top front teeth, but the one next to the 2 front teeth on the right!!

Is this normal or is there something wrong? We have made an appointment with the dentist for next week Friday but I am so worried and receptionist doesn't want me to have a word with the dentist!!

hope someone can help! Thanks

Piffle · 03/12/2007 11:21

perfectly normal the first 8 usually appear bottom two top two then bottom either side then top either side
But my ds2 has also got 3 bottoms and then 2 tops and now the other bottom one is about to come through
Makes no difference no need to see teh dentist at all

Rabbitbreath · 03/12/2007 15:36

thanks Piffle - I appreciate your feedback!

it will however look funny (cute) with 2 bottom teeth and 1 side upper tooth without the 2 front teeth!! ;---)) but as you say - they come through at their own pace!

DH and I are seeing dentist so I will ask dentist to take x-rays of dd's teeth while we are there - or just him to have a look.

hugs

I really wouldn't worry, my dd didn't cut any teeth until she was 1, and they've all come through now, she's 2.5. Getting them used to the dentist is a good thing. We took both of ours last month for the first time, and the dentist literally just stuck his finger in their mouths, I guess it's getting them used to going. I have a friend with four year old who engured a filling with no injection!!

I think dental xrays for a 6 month old are a little extreme.

hotbot · 03/12/2007 19:37

you would be exposing your child to uneccessary radiation,a dentist eould be completely irresponsible, if they would reccommend this , and the kind they would need to take are unsuitable for a baby.
i think you may be overeacting a little, let time take it course.
