My 18 month old is just starting to walk now but very unsteady and prefers to crawl, been walking for a couple weeks but Just goes back to crawling. I'm worried he is behind with other stuff too, he only says about 4 words, doesn't follow any instructions, doesn't do role play like other kids his age do, I take him to this class and they're always trying to get him to brush the teddies hair and teeth etc but he just prefers to fling stuff, he doesn't really play with toys, Wont build blocks or push a car around. He doesn't point at all like I see other kids do. I'm just really worried there might be something wrong with him. I keep trying to do these things with him but he has no interest.

Re walking .
I took my first steps at 18 months and mum said it took a few weeks to be steady .
My dd had no words at 18 months and at 22 months she says a few words Like " hiya " etc but not many .
It all sounds v normal
My dd only started pointing around 20 month old

I would discuss it with the HV if any useful or go via GP. I have a child with SN who was pretty similar at that age .

he may just be a late bloomer or he might needs some help but nobody here will be able to tell you into which bracket he falls. I'd definitely follow this up.

FatRedCrayon · 13/12/2017 21:30

Aside from walking, which DS did ridiculously early, he did none of those things till he was over 2. He is nearly 3 and now does all of them. Watching his development has been fabulous. Hopefully you will soon see a million changes and be posting something like this in a year or so's time. Smile

If your child doesn't point, barely speaks and can't follow instructions (even simple ones?) I think you should take a visit to your GP and discuss this. I wouldn't just wait and see.

I've seen a doctor and a specialist about this, I'm not just waiting I was just wanting to see if anyone else was experiencing similar issues.

My little boy is 16 months and doesn't point or wave and has only clapped a handful of times. I think it's honestly because he doesn't really see the need for it he also flings and bangs toys and I think it's because he enjoys the noise and throwing a car to him is so much more fun than pushing it along the floor.
How's your sons temprement is he easy going or boisterous
Is he playing peekaboo or tossing a ball to you and any other back and forth interactions xx

Nj200 · 14/12/2017 20:36

He's a bit of both he's dead easy going in the house but quite bad tempered when doesn't get his own way, he's also boisterous just crashes through toys etc, he won't pass you a ball or anything like that won't even hand over a toy or anything to you usually just throws it

He sounds quite rough with his toys which I am sure is completely normal so doing something more "delicate" like brushing the teeth on a teddy probably holds no interest for him.
Your son may understand your instructions but just might not want to follow them.
My son understands the instruction to turn a page in a book but he showed an interest in doing that first.
My son is being looked at after Christmas by a child development centre because he bum shuffles and has an oral aversion and it is so difficult not to compare him to other children and be worried.
What did the dr and specialist say about your son?

Nj200 · 14/12/2017 22:11

Yeah that makes sense, now that I think about it he does do things that interest him. He's not interested in books or anything like that. The specialist asked some questions and done some monitoring , she said he seems quite behind and said his development is around the same as a 12 month old for most things. They've done some blood tests to make sure there isn't anything causing it. Just waiting on the results
