giant head or rubbish hat sizes?

DS will be 3 in September. I really dont think he has a giant head but the latest sun hat that fitted was size 8 - 10 years (from Mackays). Boots hats have to be age 6. Has anyone else experienced this?

I hadn't realised just how big ds1's head was until I read on the Paediatrician's report that it was "exceptionally large" (over 97th centile). OTOH clothes/hat-sizes really do seem to vary from shop to shop. Ds1 has always been tall for his age but at one particular shop I had to buy him clothes for an 8yr-old - he was 3 at the time!

littlemissbossy · 22/07/2004 13:32

yes I too have experienced this - had to buy an adult cycle helmet for my dss when he was only 5!!

Fio2 · 22/07/2004 13:33

my son has a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge head too!

my daughter.....well she is the opposite!

poppyknot · 22/07/2004 13:52

We are all big-headed (as it were). Gap hats seem to be OK if you go for the larger ones - I ignore the ages and just go for the fit. DD2's is 4-5 and she is 1.

I hate shopping for hats for myself as i nver find anything - Accesorize is full of yummy ones and i can only fit the ones that look like tea-cosies.

All the more galling as Hat is one of my nicknames...........

One of the side effects of having alarger than average sized head is that tee-shirts are a pain to put on and take off over the aforementioned larger than average sized head! The cheaper tee shirts are better as they seem to have a lot of stretch in the collar than the more expensive ones. Or maybe it's just ds...

Hulababy · 22/07/2004 15:00

My DD is the opposite. Her circumference is pretty small so have to buy smaller aged hats for her all the time.

Yep...ds is 14 months and fits into 3-6 month clothes (just - we are working on 6-9....), but at 9 months I had to buy him a 1-2 yr old hat as the others were too small...

kittyb · 22/07/2004 15:43

thank goodness for that - its such a relief to hear that its not just us.

ds2's last hat was age 7-10 (he is 2). DS 1's medical reports all say "megacephaly" which is annoying as they have shown it to not be relevant to anything. DS2's head is even bigger. The paed said ds1's head is big because mine is.

IlanaK · 22/07/2004 20:28

My ds just turned 3 and is wearing an adult sunhat - it is a little large, but we couldn't find a childrens one to fit him. I also have a large head so it must be genetic.

Anchovy · 22/07/2004 21:38

I've been keeping quiet about this because I thought DS (now 2.10) was aberrant, but he has a HUGE head. You can't actually notice it but we know it is there. I had to have a planned C-section because of it - head never engaged and they kept re-measuring it from 36 weeks onward. He was over 97th centile for head size and looked a bit like a belisha beacon. He gets it from DH - at Christmas when everyone is wearing those flimsy little hats from the crackers DH's is always perched right up on the top of his head. His mother used to have to get his school hat directly from the supplier because the shop never stocked them.

Easy · 22/07/2004 21:41

We just bought ds a cycling helmet. Had to get an adult size to fit him (it fits me). DS will be 5 on 1st Sept!

misdee · 22/07/2004 21:42

give up with hats. bandanas are the way forward. plus they look really cool, especially with sunglasses as well.

dd2 has a big head, plsu lots of curly hair so hats just sit on top of her hair. tho she has taken a liking to dh floppy white hat, fits her too.

johno · 22/07/2004 21:44

my son is in 3-4 years hats hes 14 month, but hes a large baby for his age anyway, his head and length are both on 97th centile

misdee · 22/07/2004 21:45

sorry forgot to say, dd is 22months, and is off the charts for everything. so no surprise about her having a big head really. lol

johno · 22/07/2004 21:46

i had to buy bandana while on holiday as he wouldnt wear a hat and he looked georgeous

johno · 22/07/2004 21:47

i know you have a daughter but whats her weight line misdee

misdee · 22/07/2004 21:54

she isnt on one. she is approx 95cm tall, and weighs around 2.5stones. i gave up with the charts b4 xmas after the hv told me she was overweight and needed to go onto a diet. i had to beg them to check her height to make them see she is perfectly in proprtion, she is just a big girl.

Joley · 22/07/2004 22:09

Thank goodness, just stumbled upon this thread, ds2 is 22 months and has to wear an adult baseball cap as no other would fit. Health visitor scared the pants off us when he was 9months by calmly advising us that he could have all kinds of dreadful things wrong with him because of his enormous head, she seem to forget that it was in proportion to the rest of his body! At least I now know that other people have massive heads to.

Same issue for my dd - normal size at birth except for 97th centile head.
I just buy older size hats (she's 4 now).
She doesn't look like a big head child but clearly she is!
It is very Hollywood though to have a big head and small body...

Chandra · 23/07/2004 09:29

Bandanas? great idea... sadly I don't have a girl, but agree about the sizes (or the big heads) DS must be using a 3yrs size and he is one.
