Not moving!

DD is 11 months and as far as I'm concerned is a lazy lump, BUT the HV has got me worrying. She has said that if DD isn't weight bearing by 12 months she is going to refer to the physios. HV was most concerned that even though DD can roll, she doesn't.

I know that DD is fine, but need reassurance that her lack of wish to move is normal in some babies.

She is quite happy to sit and play for hours, kicks really strongly and accurately, and absolutely HATES being on her tummy. If I put her on her tummy she immediately rolls onto her back. HV says I should keep putting DD on her tummy but this seems unneccesary to me.

Advice from more experienced Mums than me please.

TIA

Well Im not necessarily moer experienced, but understand your concerns - DS HATES being on his tummy - will literally just drop his head down and look at me from the side as if to say 'Er...hello...some help here please?'

I've tried supporting him but he wont do it. Some babies aren't interested in crawling I was told. I know of someone who didn't cralw or roll, and only started walking at 14.5mo

Dont fret

I think that some children are just chilled out and just not in a hurry to move. Does she weight bear at all ? Neither of mine have been keen on being on their tummys and didn't roll for ages and ages. DS is completely fine. DD isn't however and has low muscle tone & flexible joints along with co-ordination problems. Having been through a few health professionals with her and know the waiting list times, I would let your HV stick her on the physio waiting list knowing that by the time she gets seen she will almost certainly be up and about running you ragged ! Meanwhile, listen to your instinct and remain as chilled out as is possible having had a HV going on at you.

Thanks both. Am trying to remain chilled

No Chocolate - she doesn't weight bear at all. If you try to stand her up she lifts her legs! She can certainly place a good solid kick or hold her legs straight when you're trying to change her nappy though

Ds didn't weight bear on his legs until he was 12 months either, he was then walking by 16 months, so I wouldn't worry too much

DD1 hated being on her tummy (my HV told me I should be doing it daily for 10 minutes.)so much that I only tried it 3 or 4 times, for about 3 seconds. She crawled at 7 months and walked at 11 months.
DD2 loved being on her tummy, crawled at 10 months, but didn't really weight bear until 13 months. Walked at 17 months.
A friend's DD crawled at about 14 months, but refused to weight bear. Her HV said to try to make her stand every day. She used to scream so much that my friend and her DP used to cry while they did it. She was referred to the hospital at 18 months - they checked her hips etc - and said she was fine, and to just let her do it when she was ready, not to force her. She eventually bore weight at 20 months, and walked just before her 2nd birthday. Now, she's three, you should see her go!!!
Although I really don't think you've anything to worry about, if you were referred to physios it would do no harm - probably just put your mind at rest. Try not to worry, and just enjoy the time while your DD stays where she's put!
I think some HVs can be wonderful, but some are a pain! I think sometimes they err on the side of caution, but take it to the extreme, to cover themselves.

Thanks so much both. I know I'm being a paranoid mummy, but I can't help it.

You're not being paranoid. DD was exactly the same, happy to sit and play but did not weight bear at all until way past 12mnths. We eventually saw community peads last month as she is now 2 and still not walking by herself. Reassuringly no problems have been found and I am happy that she is progressing and will get there, but it is worth getting your LO checked out. If she is sitting and developing normally in other respects then its likely that she'll get there in her own time. My DD started bum shuffling at about 14mnths, yours might do the same.

Hi,I recently posted a similar thread when dd was 15 months and not doing anything. She was a late one for sitting up (9 months) and I was worried as my first was running around by 15 months.DD sounds very similar to yours,in that she could roll but just didn't want to and also HATES being on her tummy.A breakthrough came at 15.5 months when she started bum shuffling. Now she is off on her bottom with a vengeance but still not trying to pull herself up or stand independently. It is worrying I agree,as you see children of a similar age walking independently, but they all develop at different rates as other posts have testified. If you are really bothered you could ask the hv for a paediatric referral.I am sure she will start moving soon.....thats when you need eyes in the back of your headBest wishes,Wrinkly.

LilRedWG · 20/04/2007 08:12

Thanks for the reassurance. DD is under a paed for other problems and no-one at the hospital has raised an eyebrow at her lazyness , but I guess that's not what they've been looking at. I'll ask paed's advice when I see him next.

Thanks again all!
