Baby Bjorn Carriers

Not sure which topic was the best to post this is, hopefully this one will do.

I was thinking of getting one of these for my new arrival and was just wondering if they were as good as a lot of people say, as they are a bit pricey.

I need something that is incredibly easy to use and faff free, that I can do on my own. I bought a cheap version to try with my ds and it was just too awkward to use so I never bothered.

So, anyone had any experience with one, before I splurge out

Thanks

I loved mine, and actually, now im pregnant with baby number 3, wish i hadnt got rid of it.

Will deffo be getting another.

I found it so easy to put baby in and out of as you are wearing it already and then just clipping them in.

Try and get second hand if you can, because they are expensive, and used for 9months max!

goingfor3 · 17/04/2007 17:23

I really did like mine and would use it again, it was worht every penny.
I'm sure you are going to get a lot of recommendations for wrap slings

My dh loved the baby bjorn, and ds would snuggle happily in it for hours but I never really got into it, and much preferred a ring sling. I wonder if it was because I am quite curvy, and the bb is designed for people who are more straight up and down.

MrsFish · 17/04/2007 19:15

Anyone got any experience of these slings

I used mine a lot until ds was 4 months old, but then he was just too heavy. It says you can use them up to 10 months, but I couldn't. I found it agony on my neck and upper back.

I got my money's worth from it until that point though.

i don't know the baba sling (and i can't say the website is helping me understand it too well), but it looks like a cross between 2 slings i have - a maya ring sling and a comfy joey sling. both of these are fabulous. i really don't like the baby bjorn and there is some discussion as to whether they risk damage to the baby's hips- esp when they get heavier, as the baby is always resting all their weight on their hips when being worn -
also, you can't use the bb above a year i think.
the baba sling says it goes to 2 years. the maya and the comfy joey will easily go to 2 years and are both cheaper and more versatile than the bb.
go to www.babywearer.com for lots and lots of info about slings. its a bit full on (like this post), but you can get good info from it.
i would say avoid, avoid, avoid the baby bjorn.

just noticed your bit about needing a faff free sling. i would go for a 'comfy joey' sling. stupidly easy and v. versatile. everyone asks me how they can get one when i wear it.

Thanks, will check it out.

It is a mind boggling thing, I have been researching it all for over an hour now and am still unsure as to what type to go for

Yeah, looking at them, I really am not sure about the material slings, its looking like it is all down to the individual... will have to see if I can try any out before deciding.

I will only really need the carrier for going on walks, won't use it round the house for housework etc or when baby gets too big.

Actually I am wondering whether I will get full use out of one or not, or whether I would be best putting the money towards a duel buggy/pram?

Decisions, decisions..

you can hire slings to try them out from lots of websites incl: bigmamslings, natural mothering, little possums.

workstostaysane · 18/04/2007 08:18

that should be bigmamaslings. sorry

I loved mine and used it loads, found it really comfy, i had a c/s too. (went for the dearer one with extra back support). Used it for a good few months although DS wasn't a massive baby.

Good idea to try one first if you know someone who has one. I am also 'curvy'...ie a bit fat and never had an issue with the fit.

I have also used an Ergo since DS got bigger but TBH wouldnt have fancied this for a newborn as straps defo not as comfy or secure feeling to wear, and not really sure it would be easy to do up in front facing mode although have not actually tried front facing. Good though and i would recommend for a toddler, although 'tis a fine art to get ds on my back by myself with it.

I know lots of people on here say about the hip damage thing with BB but have never seen any actual evidence of research backing this up?? (can anyone point me in this direction)..also when they are little they are snuggled onto you anyway and not really on their hips as such.

Anyway would defo recommend BB...fab!!

goingfor3 · 18/04/2007 10:23

I don't think my DD suffered any hip damage. We used it more than the pram, DD1 was still using it, for the first three months and she started walking at 9 months so no damage done. They are really hard wearing so a second hand one would probably be good if you don't want to spend too much.

Chocolatepenny · 18/04/2007 18:07

my 3wk old hates it, so I have bought a sling instead..fingers crossed!

MrsFish · 18/04/2007 18:13

Thanks for all the feedback, will definitely try before I buy

I had the top of the range BB (with lumbar support) for dd and loved it - used it loads when she was tiny, and a reasonable amount up until she was 9 mths - then moved onto a ring sling. I've heard negative things about the hips too, but have never seen any evidence (partly becuase I've never looked very hard )
If you do go BB, I would seriously think about the lumbar cupport one - I know loads of people who bought cheaper ones + didn't use them very long...
