How did you think she looked before you plotted her?

I would think no to being worried if her diet is fine and you think she looks ok.

(watch the baby (er I mean child) not the scales lol!)

roisin · 16/04/2007 20:41

How does she look? Is she flabby in places, or just stockily built? I would be very careful not to let her realise you have any concerns, but if necessary just gently alter her diet a bit and try and increase the fruit/veg and decrease the sugar and fat a little.

My niece is 7 and dreadfully overweight, and always has been, but her mum does nothing about it. It makes me mad.

But my ds2 is skinny as a rake, but vaguely paranoid about food already because of everything they do at school. He's nearly 8 and can still fit in his old age 2-3 pants and shorts But he refuses to eat chips at McDs and chooses fruit bag instead!

at 6 my 8yo was classed as obese, even tho he had a great diet 90% of the time. we got hassle from the doc every time i went. he eats loads, but much of that is fruit and veg and sweets are occasional. without changing a thing he is now just above the 98th percentile for both height and weight so perfectly normal. if your dd exercises and eats healthily i would not worry about it at that age. even if she was overwight they dont tell you to put them on a diet, just to make sure they eat healthily

gemmiegoatlegs · 16/04/2007 20:50

make sure you fit in plenty of running around in this nice weather. She'll be great. I don't think it's ever a good idea to make small children overly aware of how much they eat/ being fat or thin etc

scatterbrain · 16/04/2007 20:58

my dd is 6.5 and she's 28 kg - but a bit taller than yours (125 cms) - but I do think mine is looking a bit porky ! She's in Next age 8s now !

She's got quite a big tum and wobbly bottom ! she keeps asking me if she's fat - and I say she is due a growth spurt ! I don't want to give her a complex but I am upping her fruit and veg and scaling back the biscuits which she loves ! Also stepping up the exercise with mine !

Like you i think it is just prep for a spurt - but i am also slightly worried !

I think it is worth having a word with your gp next time you see him/her (out of your dd's earshot, though) - think you need experienced reassurance on this one.

But as an amateur (with a tall and most definitely "stocky" (thanks for the useful word roisin!) just-8-year-old ds), I think the advice would be: lots of exercise, and sensible food at regular mealtimes, as opposed to cutting down on the overall amount. If she has snacks between meals, you could cut those out - as I think this is the age for starting to mistake boredom for hunger.

fireflyfairy2 · 16/04/2007 21:15

I think I may be reading my charts wrong.

My dd is 26k [just over 4 stone] which I read as just over the 98th centile.

She is 115cm tall [which is just under the 98th centile if I am reading my chart correctly...] But chances are I am not reading it right at all.

She is 5years & 4 months. She is healthy & glowing. There are heavier children in her class & there are also skinnier children in her class. dd has big round rosy cheeks & everyone comments on how healthy she looks.

I can honestly say that she is a solid, well built girl who definitely isn't fat!!

Sounds like our girls are roughly the same Orinoco.

Oh, & anyone who can read charts, can you correct me if I'm reading mine wrong please?

fireflyfairy2 · 16/04/2007 21:17

I have just read your post again orinoco. You say 115cm is below 50th centile & 26k is aboce 91st... I must be reading mine wrong then

scatterbrain · 16/04/2007 21:19

Your kids are different ages though - so maybe you are reading it right ?

I was thinking similar things about my DD, mainly because I can never get clothes to fit her.

She's 6y 3m and I have bought her summer dresses for a 10 year old. Trousers are a nightmare as she has real (solid) pot belly which either pokes out from beneath her T shirts or she ends up with old man style trousers with a waistband round her armpits! She takes a size 13.5 shoe now as well.

However, she has been at the top of the centile charts from day one both for height and weight. She is now 1.27 m tall and according to my scales 34 kg - both around the 99th centile, so is technically in proportion.

Bink · 17/04/2007 10:28

AlienEars - re clothes - I'm only an expert in generous-sized boys' clothes, but I find H&M is best. Lots of adjustable waist things, and soft stretchy cotton. I should think they take the same line with girls' sizing too.

AlienEars · 17/04/2007 12:27

Thanks Bink I shall have to find out where our nearest one is - I live in a shopping wilderness!

scatterbrain · 17/04/2007 13:10

Hi AlienEars (good name btw !)- sound like my dd and your dd are similar sizes - and we also have a lot of probs with trousers - I got her some 8-9 Cherokee jeans (black with stretch) a couple of weeks ago and had to cut off the legs and hem them - but they look great ! (Only £8 too - Tesco !)

I also buy a lot from H&M - in 7-8 although the leggings I just got her are mega long on her ! She wears a lot of leggings and long tops at the mo which suit her well (me too !)

Just got her a new swimsuit from Monsoon - and got the 8-10 expecting it to be big - but it isn't ! Have a Monsoon dress in 8-9 to take back to exchange for bigger too !

She and I have been singing "Some girls are bigger than others, some girls mothers are bigger than other girls mothers" a lot lately (The Smiths !)
