5 yr old falling out of bed

Any advice? We've still got a bed guard for her, none of her friends seem to have one. Every time we've gone away on holiday, she's fallen out of the bed - on 2 occasions, she fell between the bed and the chairs we pushed against it. But then my mother said my bro and me were "always" falling out of our beds, so maybe it's more common than I think?

Toadstool

Has she had a bed guard since moving to her large bed?

Only response for asking is that why my mum moved me from my cot to a single bed she put up a bed guard to protect me from falling out. Only problem is I got use to it being there and when I was 5 and went on holiday I also fell out of bed.

In the end she totally removed bed guard and but a single mattress on floor to stop me but I continued to full out of bed until nearly 7 yrs.

Because of this I've never fitted a bed guard for dd1 & 2 just put a single mattress on floor and dd2 hasn't fallen out of bed for 5mths she's only just turned 2yrs.

Maybe you should remove guard and put something soft on floor until she retrains to remain in bed.

My dd often fell out of bed. I once went upstairs and thought someone had stollen her! She had rolled out, in the quilt and onto a beanbag so it hadn't woken her up or made any noise! I just left her there! She has grown out of it now (she's 11), but that said, I do shuffle her over a bit sometimes. Not really sure if its common or not, lets follow the thread and see....

My dd is 5 in June and still would fall out of bed if it wasn't for her bed guard. On holiday we had to take the matress off the bed and put it on the floor as there were stone floors and she splatted herself at 2am on the first night.

I plan to just leave the bed guard on as it's easier and safer - no hurry.

Both my DC had rid of the bedguard by the time they were 3 (well DD is still only 2.11!) and managed OK with only the occasional mishap at first. I think cgom's idea of putting a mattress (have you still got the cot mattress?) or spare duvet and training her is a good one.

Ds1 is 6.5y, and went from his cot to a mid-sleeper to a top bunk, so has virtually never slept in a bed without sides. We always have to use a bedguard where-ever we go, as otherwise he falls out of the bed several times a night. He and dd have recently swapped beds, so he's now on the bottom bunk. We just came home from holiday today, so hven't replaced his bedguard (which we had taken wiht us), but have piled pillows by his bed instead.

There's something to be said for not using a bedguard when going from cot to bed. I get the feeling that the earlier they learn not to fall out, the more reliable they are at not falling out.

My children went from a moses basket to a futon. No risk of falling out, and it was easy to lie down next to them if they neede a cuddle in the night. The matress on the floor is a similar solution to the problem!

Many thanks! I'll try removing the bed guard and pop her old cot mattress next to the bed, but as you say, there's no hurry, though she did manage to fall from a very high double bed on holiday last Summer!

Ds2 fell out twice last night, but he says that he was aware of falling (ie waking up on the heap of cushions was not the first thing he knew about it), so hopefully his awareness will improve!

DS1 (4) has a bed guard and STILL mananges to fall out on a regular basis. He never wakes. When we go on holiday he sleeps on a matress on the floor. Falls out of that too

DH says he fell out of bed a lot when he was a child, until he was about 10 or 11
