What time does you 7 year old go to sleep at night?

A friend of mine has a 7 year old dd is who always seems to be off of school with either a cold or something, Its definately more than 5 days in a term, more like 8. She says that she gets run down because of the pressure put upon them by the school. I have no experience of 7 years old so I dont know about this. I think it might be because she goes to bed late, 10.00 on a school night, she is not a good eater either. She has also got a really short fuse and storms off if she cant get her own way, but on the right day she is just the most lovely child, very caring and very brigh. What time is a good time to be asleep by and are your children exausted by the end of term.

Mine goes to bed at 8.30.

Twinkie · 16/07/2004 15:17

I'd say 8 or 8.30 at the latest.

I don't have a 7 year old but a 4 year old and she is in bed by 7.30.

zaphod · 16/07/2004 15:19

My 6 and 7 year olds are in their pajamas at 7.30 and tucked into bed at 8.00, ready for sleep during term-time. An hour later during the long summer holiday, cos they don't have to get up so early. 10.00 is far too late IMO, I don't doubt the child has a short fuse. I also wouldn't say that any of mine are exhausted by the end of term either(although I certainly am).

lou33 · 16/07/2004 15:20

I send my 12 year old to bed at 8.30 too, though don't expect her to be asleep until 9.30

Miaou · 16/07/2004 15:36

My seven year old goes to bed at 7.30pm. An eight year old I know regularly goes to bed between 9 and 10pm and he is constantly tired at school and has lots of days off.

hmb · 16/07/2004 15:44

I have a 7 year old who is in bed by 7.30 and can read in bed until 8.00. She sleeps in 'til about 6.15, when we all get up. Even with the early bed time she still gets very tired at the end of the term

pepsi · 16/07/2004 15:45

Im wondering whether a 7 year old would get confused in thinking the feeling they get when they are tired is the feeling of not being well. I guess some children are more sickly than others but Im sure its probably a build up of tiredness over the weeks that does it. Is there anyone out there who lets their children go to bed when the like?

My 4.5yo and 6.5yo are in bed by 7.30pm.

My 8.5yo goes to bed about 8.00pm - usually reading for around 15/20 mins after that.

curlysue · 16/07/2004 15:51

My 4.5yr old and 6.5 yr old are in bed by 7.30pm. We are all always up by 6.30pm which some people find too early but I find it makes for a fairly stress-free morning as you have plenty of time.

By 7.30pm I need my space anyway - plus the soaps start then!!

lilibet · 16/07/2004 15:52

My seven year old goes to bed at 8 but is very often still awake at 9. He has an extra hour on non school nights.

He is nearly always awake before me in the morning, and I get up at 7.30.

charliecat · 16/07/2004 16:04

My 3.5 and 6.5 year olds are in bed by 7.30-8 each night, including weekends as I cant get them back in a routine if I let it slip. Older dd stays awake reading till 8.30-9.00 depending on how much energy shes used through the day. They wake between 7-8 am.

Goldfish · 16/07/2004 17:07

my 2 ds are 9 and 10 and are still in bed by 8.30 on a school night and 9 on a Friday and Saturday and they always go straight to sleep. When they were 7 they would go to bed at 7.30 and sometimes read or keep the light on until 8.

suedonim · 16/07/2004 20:05

My 8yo goes to bed between 9 and 9.30, often awake until 10.30 or 11pm. She's awake again at 7am. She's full of energy and throws off sniffles and other minor viruses pretty well. She doesn't seem any more tired at the end of term, though the Xmas hols are always very welcome. But I think that's the strain of the festive preparations!

My other children all went to bed earlier than dd2, she's never been keen on sleeping.

Posey · 16/07/2004 21:03

My dd, just turned 7, goes up at 8 and has lights off by 8.30. She normally wakes around 7.30.
Towards the end of this term, it has crept a bit later as a lot of extra activities have been on and I find I'm having to wake her in the morning.
We definitely need the long summer hols to catch up on rest.

tigermoth · 17/07/2004 15:59

It's lucky my two are good at sleeping in. They love a lie in and I usually wake them between 8 - 8.30 for school, unless they have woken up already (about 50% of the time). The nearly 5 year old goes to bed at 9.00-ish and the 10 year old goes to be mostly 9.30 - 10.00 though has been known to stay up later.

On weekend nights I probably hold the mumsnet record for late to bed children - any time from 9.00 pm to(in the case of the 10 year old) midnight! but rarely a peep out of them till at least 9.00 am.

I am actually trying to get my 10 year old to bed a bit earlier at weekends - he stays up late watching films with his father sometimes while I go to bed. It's beyond my power a bit, but I have talked to dh and ds and they have said they will change.

My sons seem to have plenty of energy usually and not many colds of smiffles. If they had to get up earlier, I would get them to bed earlier too.

coppertop · 17/07/2004 17:58

I seem to have been 'blessed' with non-sleeping children. ds1 (4 yrs) goes up to bed at 9.30pm but is usually awake for at least an hour after that. Ds2 (17 months) falls asleep at about 11-11.30pm. Neither of them tends to get ill often and both have way too much energy in the daytime.

WideWebWitch · 17/07/2004 21:00

My nearly 7yo goes at 8pm

My 7 year old dd is always tired by 7 and is asleep by 7.30. If she ever goes to bed later (when away on holiday for example) she still wakes up at 7 - 7.30

marthamoo · 29/07/2004 15:18

My 7 year old is in the bath for 7.30 and in bed for 8. He wakes up much earlier than me - 6ish most days. Despite getting a good amount of sleep he is completely run down and exhausted by the end of term!

Momof2 · 29/07/2004 15:25

My 7 year old is a bad getter to sleeper - but a really good sleeper once she has got to sleep. I would say most nights she is in bed by 9 but lies awake reading or staring at the ceiling until 11. She had 3 days off school in the entire year 2 and does activities most afternoons after school, I did once worry about her inability to get to sleep (there was a thread about it) but now I figure that she just doesn't need that much sleep. Mind you she does sound different to your friend's daughter in that she eats and is generally laid back about everything, so I suppose all kids are different.

Momof2 · 29/07/2004 15:32

Now on the other hand step DD who is 7 too goes to sleep at 9pm at the very latest - if she isn't in bed by then she tends to fall asleep whereever (like sofa) but she is always up at 6 - 6.30am so I suppose they both get the same amount really. DD has this amazing ability to sleep through her step sister at 6am in the morning shaking her and shouting WAKE UP! But at 7.30 - 8am wakes up complaining that no one woke her up

Soulfly · 30/07/2004 19:06

Have a DD whos is 5 and ds who is 4 both go to bed between 7-8, although have been abit slack this holiday but they are quite good at getting back into routine. They are only little once aren't they??s
