ds2 has a speech disorder!!

Jimjams · 16/07/2004 11:48

And a delay- but particularly a disorder. Well what a surprise! And it's a completely off the wall one as well- what another surprise! Everything else is fine though (social skills, language comprehension etc).

I think someone should study our family-- we'd make a great research project.

I think I should probably be more worried than I am (just can't get worried though`). Our SALT seemed a bit fazed by it- aparently he's all over the place. Loads of sounds missing, and a few later sounds in place (apparently they should develop in a set way).

Anyway our main concern is to get his speech advanced enough that we can avoid having to see the awful NHS SALT who deals with all the weird pre-school speech disorders. I don't think I could bear being in a room with her again! This time waiting lists may be on our side. He's been referred to a community therapist (although he's going to be out of her league!) and god only knows when he'll be seen so the referral to the awful SALT is at least a few months away phew!

Thanks Jimjams - that's where I got our other one from, I will try another one from the list (although there aren't many listed for north London) and hope she is more helpful than the first.

Thomcat · 19/07/2004 17:49

jimJams - i too did exactly the same as Tamum and Fio and thought, oh no, not JimJams, and sorry to see it was
Glad you're being so positive though.

lingling · 20/07/2004 09:48

I am thinking of you but it does sound as though you have the right help lined up. Your ds2 sounds quite similar to my ds3...doesn't stop talking but almost impossible to understand what he is saying. My ds3 has had hearing problems but the doctors have commented not bad enough to really affect his speech as much as his has been affected. My SALT said that ds3's sound system was very immature.. he says vowels well, the y and the b sound but not much else so every word he says begins with a y or a b.

bells2 · 20/07/2004 12:06

Best of luck with this Jimjams. Our private speech therapist (who I found through the list you kindly directed me towards) was outstandingly excellent. Our NHS one was truly awful. He seemed to have no idea of how a 2 year old in real life behaved and spent most of his time trying to diagnose non-existent behaviour/development problems rather than getting her talking. Anyway, after 9 months of therapy, her speech is almost approaching age-appropriate.

Jimjams · 20/07/2004 18:55

Oh no no no!@!!!@@@!!!!

My mum keeps bumping into the SALT from the ICAN nursery- she thinks it would be ideal for hime. But here's the catch. The community therapists he was referred to in January aren't seeing anyone new at the moment as they are too short staffed (!!!) So she has said he needs to be referred to the witch woman for assessment and she can then pass him onto ICAN. I HATE this evil cow (as does every mother who has had dealings with her). She's the stupid cow who told everyone that I was "well known for not being able to accept my son's autism"-or at least she started that one. SHe is so negative and horrible, and really seems to believe that SN kids are subhuman. Yuck yuck yuck.

The ICAN SALT is great though- so hopefully we will get a place.

HV has now referred him to the witch.

bad luck! does it help at all knowing that she is a witch - at least you're not expecting her to be nice, so she can't disappoint you in that way.

Flippant suggestion: write 'ICAN' on your hand in biro before you see her and if she's talking C* just look down and focus on that word.

maddiemo · 21/07/2004 20:00

Hope the appointment does not take too long to come through. I am glad you know where you are at with ds2 as it does make it all easier to deal with.
Good luck.

hmb · 21/07/2004 20:08

Damn, Jimjams, I've just causght up with this thread. Sorry to read your news, but as others have said at least everything else is in place and as it should be.

Hugs to you all

Jimjams · 21/07/2004 21:48

Well HV rang up to check I was happy for him to be referred onto the witch. She said that community SALT is just not happening down here at the moment so doing to the CDC is the only way really.

She asked me if we were OK with having 2 in the family. I'm fine with ds2 as I know he's fine in everything else, but have to admit it does worry me about number 3's chances especially if number 3 is a boy. Not worried about speech disorders but could do without more autism. TBH I kind of think its someone elses turn!

So anyway we've been sent to the hell beast and we now just have to wait to see her.

OP posts:
Jimjams · 10/09/2004 16:21

Hell beast has refused to see him and he has been referred back to the community -who won't see him until next year.

BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT

Sometime in August he began to talk properly (as properly as you can at 2 and a half). Some sounds are still missing (eg k, g) but I'm not concerned about his speech really. Strangers can now understand him. DS1's SALT didn't see him for 3 weeks- and was amazed when she saw him last Saturday. Nursery have said his speech is better than many others his age. It pretty much came overnight.

So now I can be really annoying and be one of those people who say "my son didn't talk until he was almost 3 and then he didn't stop" lol

GeorginaA · 10/09/2004 16:24

FANTASTIC Jimjams! I am sooooo pleased!

Am looking forward to the posts along the lines of "how do I get my ds2 to shut up now?"

hoxtonchick · 10/09/2004 16:25

Brilliant news jimjams

Jimjams · 10/09/2004 16:33

Oh god Georgina I think it all the time- but I couldn't bring myself to post it I could even post on "funny things they say" threads now ('oh ook mummy daddy's lunchbox" pointing at dh's HUGE briefcase- one of those court ones lawyers use).

Fio2- lots of people did say that - and nursery did seem to help his speech a lot- so maybe. He still calls granny "ai" interestingly which is what ds1 calls her.

Letterboxes- grrrrr. He is obsessed with next door's.

And ds1 is suddenly a PECS maniac.

Hoo-bloody-rah Jimjams! Just fantastic. So pleased about ds2. Ds1 really does seem to be improving fast too, from your posts. It's brilliant.
And speaking of letterboxes, my ds went up and down an entire street of shops yesterday fiddling with/looking through all the letterboxes and I thought of you! Mind you, he also looked under the doors in the loos at Sainsbury's! Lovely surprise for the old ladies within....
