Label fascination

My DS 2.5 has got a label fascination. Will not go to sleep without being able to touch it and stroke it, also knows where all the labels are on all of his clothes.

I think that this was his second understandable word.

Is this Normal

My dds are still fixated by labels, aged 5 and 7! It must be the texture I think. They both have lots of TY toys and ever since they were physically able, they would sleep with a finger through the label (it forms a loop).

Just last night I was woken up by dd2 crying because she had twisted the label of her toy round her finger so much that she had cut off the circulation in her finger!

I never worried about it, but only because, when I mentioned it, I found loads of friends had children with the same fixation.

My dd was just like this, particularly the label on her clothy. She would rub it between her fingers and stroke it along her nose as she went off to sleep. Eventually it was all but worn away, and she asked me to knit her a new label! I duly cut the label off another unused cloth the same and sewed it on. When that wore out she didn't ask for a new one, but still has the cloth when she's tired, poorly or worried. She's now 7 btw.
Its all normal, just a different attachment thing.

sounds like my mate's dd
she always needed a 'label tag' to go to sleep!

Piffleoffagus · 14/07/2004 20:47

NORMAL!
dd is 20 mths and has been a label houndette since 6 weeks....
If she cannot find the label of her fluffy rug she wails pitifully...
WEll I say normal cos my kid is doing it, shite... it is normal isn't it? A wider consensus required I feel!

My nephew does it, he inherited his texture fascination from my brother - it is normal. Better than my sister who used to eat soil with a spoon!

Thinking about it, the labels are often "silky" to the touch - my kids also love my silky pyjamas for the same reason - and I know plenty of children for whom their cuddle blanket is a piece of silky material.

This'll probably scare you mums rather than help but here goes....I must own up that I am a 30 yo who is still fixated with labels (my mother cannot even remember when it started)! Well not fixated but happier when wearing something with a label + definately like to have one under my pillow (luckily have a chilled out dh who doesn't find this weird).
You've got it in one - the more silky (well actually satin are the best!) the label the better as if you rub two sides together it squeaks or if you just run the edge of it agains your skin it has a sort of lightly ridgid side to it (realised that this is just impossible to explain)!
Anyway it all sounds like I need therapy (whenever my mother notices that I have not grown out of this it worries her a great deal!) but I figure as it's my worst vice (I don't smoke, drink in moderation, never stopped me getting a good education etc) there's no reason to try to break the habit! It also seems to be a family thing as I have 3 (adult)cousins who have all retained their "label" (well, satin ribons in this case) fascination either. One good thing about the whole thing is that you grow up with an incredible knowledge of different fabrics!
