2.3 year old drinks water all night

Our little boy slept through the night up until three months ago when he was ill and we offered him milk to get him relaxed and back to sleep...since then he wakes up to five times a night for a drink. We managed to slowly transition from milk to water by gradually diluting the milk with water to save his teeth rotting but he still wakes for the water.
I am pregnant again now and I can't take waking up so often...no matter whether me or OH gets up to get him a sippy cup, it still wakes me up. He needs his nappy changed each time he wakes, or else all his sheets need washed and it's so much work.

Leaving a cup in reach does no good, he is too sleepy to find it. I tried to let him cry it out, and he screamed for over an hour before I gave up...I felt awful, he was in hysterics and showed no sign of relenting.

What can I try, other than crying it out? He is still too immature to reason with, and it would never workwhen he is sleepy at night, especially if he is upset

How much water is he getting? I would begin to reduce the amount in the cup until there's nothing but a sip in it...hopefully he'll realise it's not worth it!

Has his drinking increased during the day?

Melabela10 · 16/09/2017 20:41

It sounds that he drinks excessively. How much water in total he consumes during the day? If he just take a sip then it might be just bad habit if he is drinking then it could be underlying sign of something else .

He doesn't drink more during the day. Less actually, I would say. I am certain it's just a bad habit, nothing else. It is driving me round the bend, things haven't improved at all.

Since I posted, we have reduced the amount of water in the cup each time we hand it to him by half, and from then we'll half it again I think. So far the result seems to be occasional screaming for a refill as soon as he is done, but this happens rarely tbh. No more than twice a night out of say seven wakings.
