When I was pregnant my LO was breach.?he was that far up in uterus his head was pushing against top of uterus wall so when he was born his cone shape was st back of head rather than top in natural birth. His head therefore measured 38cm and in 24hrs reduced by 2cm. Pedi said it would reduce and go normal as skull develops. The cone shape has gone and looking at him, his head does not look big (he is a tall baby). But at his 8 week review this week the doctor made a comment when measuring his head saying - ooh, he has a big head, well, he'll grow into it, or maybe he won't - quite mater of fact in her tone. It measured 42cm. But it was the way she said it, as if it wasn't normal, surely if his head was big it would be noticeable before seeing what it measured. I actually measured it myself when got home and I got it at 40cm, not 42cm. He is 10lb and his dad is tall (6ft,2) which I think he is going to take after. Anyone else with same?

DS is 18m old and at birth was 99th percentile for head circumference. He was scanned at the hospital at 8 weeks to make sure nothing was wrong and a follow up at 6m got him signed off as just having a big head.

If the head grows rapidly as a young child it can be a sign of autism apparently and of course they want to rule out cysts/tumours etc. But in our case he just has a big head.

What's annoying is, she said it in a way that gets you worrying but she never said anything like needing to monitor it or send him for a scan etc, so you come away feeling confused and if it is normal or not and end up with more questions.

Measuring their head is very inaccurate.

Some children have bigger heads than others. My girls always were up at the top end of the centiles, ds is down on the 9th.

But dh's family have big heads. His dbro could never get anything like a cub cap to fit him.

I wouldn't worry unless it seems to be getting out of proportionally big. With my dc the only time they worried was with ds and that was because he initially measured 50% then went down to 9th. As he stayed on the 9th, their conclusion was the initial measurement was probably wrong, and he just had a small head.

My HV was worried about the size and referred us to a paediatrician, the rude peads Dr told us that there could be something wrong with ds his height was 50th percentile and his head was above the 99th percentile. She had us really worried, I asked what it could mean and she wouldn't answer and referred us for a scan. Seen the consultant for the scan and was told in 2 seconds of the consultant seeing ds that he was perfectly fine and had just inherited a big head. It's called benign familial macrocephaly.
