When did yours feed themselves with a spoon?

My son is 11 months and feeds himself finger food well and has done for several months. However, he has no interest in taking a spoon off me to feed himself. When I hand him the a spoon and a bowl of food he just throws the spoon on the floor and makes no attempt to scoop any food out.
When did yours start using a spoon, or even start TRYING to use a spoon? He show no interest in the spoon and obviously doesn't know what to do with it.

Mine has played with spoons and grabbed them off me since 4 months (he only ever chewed them or threw them) and now just coming up to 13 months hes starting to bash the food with it and sometimes get the odd bit of yoghurt or something very mushy/smooth/wet by himself. Hes only been doing this for a month. He prefers to think of everything as finger food still though, (yoghurt!)

SnS, dd is 21 months and is still hit and miss with using her spoon despite being very dextrous in most other ways. She can do it but sometimes she won't. In terms of when she started, like jane313 she got interested in holding and chewing a spoon around 12 months old, then we went through a phase where I'd put food on the spoon for her and she'd lift it to her mouth, though she'd frequently get it upside down or in her nose etc. If your ds is doing well with finger foods I wouldn't be bothered at all, he'll get round to it when he's ready.

dd1 wasn't interested in using her spoon to feed herself until about 2.5 years old and then only because we started to push "table manners". dd2 (21mths) is already able to feed herself with her spoon nearly as well as dd1 (now 3.5). I think if she was left to it dd1 would still us ehr hands, whereas dd2 wants to do everything like a grown up. I think that it's a personality thing and they're all different!!!

DS is nearly 15 months and has only in the last few weeks shown any eagerness, and DD was even worse!! I feed him but give him a spoon too and more often than not he tries to feed me as I'm feeding him IYSWIM.. When he's really hungry he's more than likely to try more... I wouldn't worry - they all get the hang of it in the end.

Can't remember ds1, but ds2 became insistent about a month ago, aged 13 months (whilst we were on holiday), and as we weren't clearing up we were happy to let him experiement freely.

Unfortunately he hadn't quite mastered his newly-found skill by the time we left Greece...

Dd was competent (but messy!) with a spoon at 11 months, and ds was 1 year old.
Right from the beginning (about 5 months)when I was spoon feeding them I would give them an extra spoon to hold/bang/stick int heir mouths/splosh in the bowl/etc

ds1 was 3 and only really started because of peer pressure at nursery. He was always capable but only ever ate anything if "mummy help." Think it was attention seeking from ds2 time at the table. ds2 is just as capable at 2.3yr but will only really eat a decent meal if I help. His opening gambit at mealtimes is "mummy do it" Guess my kids just arent foodies. I found it v frustrating with ds1 but I'm more laid back with ds2, wonder what I'll be like when new baby arrives!
