Aspergers diagnose, how to start?

If i suspect my son has aspergers, how does it get diagnosed and who is the first point of contact to start with?

Is there any way someone can assess during school without my son knowing?
We don't really want him to know unless they suspect too and want further investigations. He doesn't see that there are any issues but we do

If you're in the UK your GP would usually be the first port of call, you don't have to take DS with you. Your DS would be referred on and (after a wait) he'd usually have several sessions with different specialists - clinical psychologist, developmental paediatritian, speech & language, etc. Depending on what his issues are they would probably want to consider other possibilities as well as Asperger's. You and his teachers might be asked to fill in some questionnaires about him. My DS was also observed in school by the paediatritian but I think that's quite rare. They would want to talk to him because a lot of Asperger's is to do with communication issues and they would want to look for specific problems in his communication.

You might want to talk to his class teacher and the SENCO first, just to see if they also have concerns. The SENCO might also be willing to observe him discreetly but a SENCO isn't an expert and couldn't really say anything for certain. The school might have an educational psychologist who could give a view.
